The candle in the room flickered with the movement, so that the orange light danced back and forth and cast shadows. Sophia loved that darkness, for it hid the sin of her pleasure that night.

Yet it did not feel like a sin.

Jeremy’s arm was still pressed to hers as they laid beside each other, and that intimacy made her long to reach out and touch him again. She could enfold her body in his side, but that felt like something that was forbidden to her.

Sophia kept her back on the bed. Her limbs were exhausted, but in a very pleasurable way. It was as if every fiber of her body still rung out, like a tuning fork for a pianoforte that had been struck. She closed her eyes and sank her hands into the covers beneath her, anchoring herself to that bed.

Beside her, Jeremy was breathing just as heavily, catching his breath. His proximity, with his arm against hers was still tantalizing.

If only we could share such a thing again… but we cannot, can we? Our deal is at an end now. He has no more to offer.

The mere thought made tears well behind Sophia’s eyes. She kept her eyes firmly closed for a second, attempting to push away the thought before it could make tears fall.

I want to be with him. Completely and not just at night in illicit moments. Is that truly so awful?

The thrill had been incredible, but Sophia knew part of what had made those moments entangled together wondrous was not just the heat of excitement and sex. It was something more, something deeper.

I truly have fallen in love with him.

Sophia sat up abruptly on the bed and opened her eyes. She looked at the carnage around the room, with all of their clothes tossed in different places. When she went to slide off the bed, a hand touched her back.

It was incredibly soft, merely a brush of fingers, but it made her halt, basking in the feeling of the way it made her spine tremble.

“Do not go yet, Sophia.” Jeremy’s voice was deep, and barely above a whisper. She turned in her place sat on the bed, the better to look at him.

In the one candle that was with them, it basked him in a dark orange light, revealing the sharp lines of his face and the soft smile playing on his lips.

“You wish me to stay?” Sophia asked, unable to keep the hope out of her voice.

“I am hardly in a hurry for you to leave,” he said with a playful whisper. He took his hand off her and offered it to her instead, encouraging her to take it. She did just that and let him draw her back to the mattress, until they were entwined together.

Her head rested on his shoulder, with her body on its side. One of his arms had wound around the curve of her waist whilst the fingers dangled there, tracing soft lines up and down her bare skin. His other hand was still in hers, and he used it to place her palm to his chest, before resting his fingers over hers.

She could feel beneath that touch how fast his heart was pumping from what they had shared together. It took a long time for it to slow down.

They stayed there in peace for some minutes together, neither of them saying anything, before Sophia felt the pull of sleep. She soon dozed off pressed against Jeremy, feeling the pulse of his heartbeat. As she drifted, there was only one thought on her mind.

He asked me to stay. Does that mean, like me, he does not want this to end?
