Odd, did one of the manservants go that way?

“Time to go,” Lady Rumpton declared and pulled Sophia through the doorway of the house. Jeremy watched, standing close to the carriage and admiring as Sophia had a heartfelt goodbye with her staff. She was sweet with them all, taking her housekeeper’s hand and kissing her maid on the cheek. The butler gave her so deep a bow that it showed his true respect for her.

Once Sophia turned away from them and moved down the steps, Jeremy stepped forward, intending to take her hand and help her into the carriage.

Nearby, there was an odd clicking sound.

Wait, I know that sound.

Jeremy had heard it before. Sophia’s head jerked up as she stopped in front of him, looking at the hand he had outstretched toward her.

That sounds like a shotgun.

He’d heard the same sound time and time again when he had gone shooting the day before with Stephen.

“Gun!” Stephen roared clearly realizing the same thing.

Jeremy looked round, seeking out where the gun was, but it was too late. He heard the bang ricochet through the air.
