Laura headed to the guest bathroom, speaking in that reassuring voice she had. “No worries, I’mused to it by now. Going to wipe it off.”

“They probably need their nap.” Thomas lifted his boy from the high chair then paused and looked at me.

“Sorry.” My eyes darted from him to the hall where Iheard Laura’sfootsteps.

“Iknow.” His lips curved to the side. “Got alot going on at work?”

“You can say that.” Icut my answer short, stifling the need to dash to where Laura went when Iheard the water start running. My urgency must’ve been showing, or it didn’t—Ididn’tgive afuck at that point. All Icared about was being alone in aroom with Laura and understanding if she was considering going out with thisperfect manErin wanted to set her up with.

“But I’mokay, totally okay.”

“Cool. Let’sgo, kid.” He kissed Rowan’stemple and disappeared up the stairs.

As soon as he turned toward the kids’ room, Istrode to Laura, my unease blending with envy and being topped off with the need for clarity.

“What are you doing?” Laura paused mid-swiping her shoulder with toilet paper and brought her eyes to mine when Ibarged in the room, closing the door behind me.

Advancing on her, Ileft almost no room to separate us. “Are you planning on seeing other people?”

She placed her hands on my chest to halt my steps when her back hit the tile wall, and though her hand position appeared defensive, her voice was anything but. “What the fuck are you talking about? Why are you like this?”

“I’mtalking about out there.” Inodded toward the kitchen. My pulse quickened as more unsolicited images of her dating someone else infiltrated my head. “Why was Ithe only one who seemed to think it was abad idea?”

“Last Ichecked, Idon’towe you explanations.” Her eyebrows lowered and pulled closer.

“You don’t.” Ibrought my forehead down to hers, cupping her cheek while hiking her dress up. Ihad nothing else to offer her, to convince her Iwas worth her time. “It would be nice to know where your head’sat.”

She gripped my wrist when Ipushed her panties aside, her teeth sinking down on her lip to stifle amoan. “Ithought this, us, wasn’tanother fucked-up relationship.”

“It isn’t.” Ilowered my forehead to touch hers. “But Idon’twant you to date that kid, or anyone else.”

Her eyes lost their lust haze, her sharp stare boring into mine. “Why?”

Irealized too late what it sounded like, combined with the last half-hour’sact, and ajealous boyfriend was the furthest thing from what Iwas. To fix that impression, Iturned to more lewd talk to draw us back to what we were. Freeing myself from her hold, Ibraced both hands on the wall, trapping her head between them. “Iwant to be the only one to fuck you Tulip, and Iwant it without protection. Ican’thave other people getting in the way.”

“Fine.” Her wicked smile surprised me. Not like Iexpected her to flinch, not Laura, but Ididn’texpect her to like it or to be amused. “Good enough reason and Iwon’t. One day though, if the situation changes, you’ll hear it from me.”

“Fair enough.”One dayandifmeant this wouldn’thappen in the near future, and by then we would be tired of each other.

“One more thing.” She paused, pushing my chin back when Ilowered my lips to hers. “When that day comes, you better not give me that alpha male scene shit that went down out there, or I’ll slap you so hard you’ll hear bells ringing. Got it?”

In that moment, despite the alpha show Idid and despite me having her locked to the wall, Laura was the one who held me by the balls. Her piercing blue and green eyes made sure Iremembered it, and Ifreaking loved that she did. “You’re the boss,” Iadmitted willingly, letting go of my fight and pushing off the wall.

She resumed cleaning the remainder of puke on her dress when she said with an air of defiance, “Iknow Iam, and now you do too.”
