CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

Laura

Being Zach’sfriend was alot of things, but above all it was special.

He had this talent of making every situation comfortable. Like talking about painful subjects or waking together for the second day in arow. Nothing too awkward for that guy.

When his four thirty alarm went off, we woke up each on our own side. Igroaned and he growled, from the lack of sleep, not from smelling each other’smorning breath.

We looked at each other for abrief moment, considering whether we should up our game from two nights ago and kiss. My thoughts consisted of the very matureeeewnoand the rebellioushell no, into intimacy we won’tgo.

“Go back to sleep,” he whispered, as his feet landed quietly on the rug. “I’mheading to the gym. Will be back in an hour.”

“Sleep is for the weak.” Itossed my arm over my face, even though the sun didn’trise for at least another hour. “I’ll be up in ten minutes. I’ll start working from here.”

“Right.”

Apparently, Iamused him.

And for agood reason.

“Laura…” Alarge palm shook me in the most tender way, accompanied by the smell of coffee. “Time to wake up.”

Ienjoyed the smell of coffee for the whole of two seconds. Opening my right eye into atiny slit, Isaw Zach’ssweaty and sexy face grinning at me. “What did you say the time was?”

“Ididn’t. It’sfive thirty.”

Both my eyes opened wide and Isat up, forcing the sleep away. “Fuck.”

“Drink this.” He held the mug in front of my face. “You still have about ten minutes while Ishower. Don’tstress it.”

“I’ll be ready.” Iaccepted the coffee and stared at it as if by doing that all my problems would be fixed. “Fuck, Ihave aton of work and Iwanted to start while I—”

Zach crouched down to meet my eyes, placing afinger under my chin. “It’sfive fucking thirty, the sun hasn’teven woken up yet, and you needed the rest. I’ll have you home in half an hour, promise.”

“Fine.” Istopped my sulking. Ish.

“You’re more than welcome to join me.”

“Get out, we’re already so late.”

He lingered in the room, grinning and smelling like ayummy sweaty man, and then he was gone. At the third sip of coffee, my brain started functioning and Ihopped off the bed. Ijoined him in the bathroom once the water had stopped running to avoid getting distracted by his naked body in the shower.

It became painfully clear that Ishould’ve waited awhile longer. Having Zach brush his teeth alongside me with only atowel tied around his waist gave me aton more ideas than seeing him blurry behind amilky glass would have.

Also, an inner voice kept screaming,Fuck work and go fuck him, and Ihad to tell that voice to go fuck itself instead.

If Zach noticed my inner turmoil, he didn’tshow it.

We got dressed, me with my pants from last night, Zach with adark striped suit. Iheld back acurse at how exceedingly hotter he looked with every layer of clothing he wore and kept my eyes to myself while organizing my bag.

We arrived at my street at exactly the time he promised. For the entire ride, with only the morning radio show as our soundtrack, Idreaded the upcoming awkward goodbye.

Zach beat me to it. He stepped out of the car, took my bag from the backseat, and opened my door. When Ihadn’tmade amove, he outstretched his hand.

“Thought you wanted to get home?”

Istared, still alittle stupefied by the sweet gesture. We both needed to get to our jobs and yet here he was, helping me instead of hurrying there. “Thanks.” Icame to slowly, accepting his open hand.
