“A discrepancy that he’s always after me to remedy.” Aaron sighed. He cared deeply about Daniel and Helena. He wanted to do what he could to help them, but he had also dreamed for some time of working his way up the ranks of the Santa Fe. He could see himself becoming an area superintendent one day. He imagined himself capable of overseeing an entire district and doing it well.

“I’m bettin’ he’d pay better than the railroad.”

Aaron sighed. “I suppose he would. Still, the railroad was the job I always saw for myself.”

“Have you prayed about it?” Jim asked, putting aside his fork for the steaming cup of coffee.

“Not really.”

“You know that’s not a good way to handle the matter.”

“I do, but what if God wants me to give up my plans and go with those Garcia has for me? What if I end up feeling obligated to marry Isabella?”

“First of all, she’d have to agree to marry you as well. You’ve made it clear she can’t stand you.”

“True enough.”

“Maybe God just wants you to help a dying man without the need to marry his widow or daughter. Pray about it, Aaron. We both know prayer is where you’re going to end up anyway, so stop putting it off. Spend some real time seeking the Lord on this matter. He’ll show you what He wants from you.”

“Yeah. That’s what I’m afraid of.”
