Isabella followed his gaze and saw her mother smiling up into her father’s face. She always looked at him with such adoration. They did have something special. Isabella just hadn’t understood it before. She wasn’t sure she understood it now. But at least she could see it for what it was. Instead of making her happy, however, the thought left her feeling empty. What would her mother do once Papi was gone?

“You’re frowning again.”

She nodded. “I’m just trying to figure out what my mother will do once my father is gone. As close as they are, how can one live without the other?” She looked at Aaron for an answer but knew he wouldn’t have one.

“There’s only one love more perfect than theirs,” he replied. “The love of God for your mother is even deeper.”

Isabella considered that. “When I was little and got scared of something, Mama always said that God’s love was perfect and that perfect love drives out all fear. She told me God loved me even more than she and Papi did, and therefore I needn’t ever be afraid.”

“A beautiful thought, don’t you think?”

Isabella’s parents chose that moment to start walking their way. “I’d like to believe it. Especially now.” She glanced at Aaron. “I just don’t know if I can.”
