He left the house and headed down the mountain road. No one offered him a carriage ride back to the mining houses. He was nothing but a peon, and no one was obliged to offer him anything.

Not even the benefit of the doubt.

“I thought I would have a chance to speak to Diego after you talked.”

Isabella could see real anger in her father’s eyes. “He lied to me about everything. Made his excuses and sounded quite sincere. I played along to give his father time to find the truth about the woman he has supposedly married.”

“His father wants him to remain here?” Isabella asked.

“Yes, I think he’s hoping it will keep Diego out of further trouble. I don’t know what to think. His father is likely to find almost anything. Diego mentioned a child at one point. I now think there may be a baby involved.”

Isabella looked at Aaron and then back to her father. “Howterrible for them both if it’s true.” She shook her head. “I’ll say nothing. I’ll avoid any contact with him.”

Her father nodded. “Yes. I don’t want you having anything to do with him.”

“I understand, Papi.” She went to him and stretched up to kiss his cheek. “I’ll do as you say.”
