“Let me go in there while someone else is depositing the ransom—or the stack of newspapers Lucas suggested. It’s being cut up as we speak. While all the attention will be on the money, I’ll already be in place. I’ll leave immediately and make my way there. No one will be the wiser.”

“All right.” Daniel knew that if Diego Morales was involved, he’d be hard-pressed to keep Isabella under control, get the money, and make a getaway all at once. That was, unless he had friends. “Has anyone seen John Briggs? I want to talk to him.”

“He’s going with Aaron,” one of the other men replied.

“Stop him. I want to talk to him first. We need to find out about Diego’s friends.”

The man took off in a hurry.

“Diego?” the sheriff asked.

“Diego Morales. He was here for a short time. He thought he’d marry my daughter.”

“Oh yeah, I remember him now.” The sheriff walked to the window. “They’re still down there. Trying to get organized with lanterns and such.”

“I have some Eveready lights,” Daniel said. “Pablo, go get those and have Aaron hand them out. Make sure there are batteries in each one. We have extra batteries in the pantry.”

“Sí, Señor Garcia.” The boy took off at a run.

“So what about Diego Morales?”

“We didn’t part on good terms,” Daniel said, falling back against his pillows. “He’s the only one I can think who would want to harm me—who would want to harm Isabella. He’s in a desperate state.”

“We’ll find him no matter his condition. I promise you, Daniel.” The sheriff headed for the door. “I’m going to get the things I’ll need and head out to the drop site. Hopefully this will all be over by tomorrow.”

Daniel closed his eyes but nodded. “I pray you’re right and that she’ll be home safely.”
