“Men have evil in their hearts and do stupid things. That’s most likely why this happened, but I’m not going to try to second-guess God. I’ve learned my lesson where that’s concerned. Now, come on, we need to get back to the house and see if anyone else has found anything. It’s nearly suppertime, and I’m starved.”

“I can’t bear the idea of her being gone another night.”

“Maybe she won’t be. Maybe the sheriff caught whoever was coming for the ransom and found her too.”

Aaron mounted his horse, and Jim did the same. “I’m going to find her.” It bolstered his spirit just speaking the words aloud.

Jim smiled. “I know you will.”

There was a great deal of commotion when they returned to the Garcia house. Maya came running from the kitchen door to greet Aaron.

“They caught the men who demanded the money. Sheriff Jones caught them, and they’re here.”

Aaron nodded and jumped from his horse. He handed her the reins and ran for the house. He pushed past several men standing in the foyer, drinking lemonade, and raced down the hall to Daniel’s bedroom.

Bursting through the door, Aaron pushed several peopleaside to get to the sheriff and the two men who looked absolutely terror-stricken as they stood at the edge of Daniel’s bed. Aaron didn’t recognize either man.

“Just tell us where she’s being held,” Daniel said. “We’ve already guessed this is Diego Morales’s plan. Tell us where she is, and we’ll take it easy on you.”

Aaron didn’t wait for them to speak. Instead, he went up to the first man and took hold of him by the collar. “Tell me where she is, and maybe I won’t put my fist through your face.”
