DID SHE SAY YES?

WE’RE SHOPPING NOW.

YOU AND AMARI? WHY? WE NEED HER TO SAY YES!

Ivy couldn’t help it. She snapped a photo and sent it to Drew. When she emerged from the dressing room, Amari was in the same exact outfit.

Ivy had no idea that the day was just getting started. Amari and Ivy rode down to Malibu in Amari’s Mini Cooper convertible. Amari had little regard for the curves of Sunset Boulevard as they raced toward the Pacific Coast Highway. Ivy was exhausted. She wanted to go home. But she couldn’t. Amari was talking about the movie as if she was going to do the movie but still hadn’t said yes.

Ivy wound up at the Malibu beach house of an aging wannabe producer. People were hanging out in the middle of a Thursday, drinking wine and watching the dolphins frolic. She thought about calling an Uber. But Amari promised she would drive her home. She didn’t say when. After the party, they hopped back into Amari’s car and stopped at the New Beverly Cinema. It was the movie theater that Quentin Tarantino had purchased, and he personally programmed all of the movies. Amari and Ivy sat in the back and watched Madonna inDesperately Seeking Susan, a fun comedy about amnesia and mistaken identity. It was about a bored suburban housewife obsessed with the ultracool Susan. Amari also watched Ivy. Studied her, more like it. She started eating her popcorn one kernel at a time—just like Ivy.

They went to the restroom together. In her own stall, Ivy was able to text Drew.

AT THE NEW BEVERLY. WATCHINGDESPERATELY SEEKING SUSAN.

WTF?

WITH AMARI. IT’S REALLY GOOD.

SHE SAID YES?????

WORKING ON IT

SO WHAT’S REALLY GOOD?

THE MOVIE.

After the movie, Amari asked Ivy if she was tired. Ivy lied. She was up for anything. She kept bringing up her script, and Amari kept deflecting. Ivy hoped the next destination on the Amari Express was a coffee shop or an all-night diner so they could talk. It wasn’t. It was alouddance club in Downtown LA. Near Drew’s apartment. Ivy and Amari danced the night away. At least until two in the morning, as that was when things closed in Los Angeles.

“I’m in. I’ll do your movie,” Amari finally said. “I have the sense we can work together. We can be soul sisters.”

“Oh my God, thank you, Amari,” Ivy gushed as they hugged. Someone asked if they were twins. Ivy was beaming.

She walked back to Drew’s place from the club. Her phone had died hours ago. She arrived at Drew’s condo.

“What happened? You disappeared!” Drew exclaimed.

“I was with Amari. Lunch, shopping, movies. You know,Desperately Seeking Susanis very underrated. After the movie, we hit that new dance club across from the Crypto.com Arena.” Drew just stared at her, wanting to know the only thing he wanted to know. “Oh, and she said yes. She’s doing the movie!” Ivy shrieked.

Drew was ecstatic. He had a bottle of champagne on ice. He popped the cork and yelled, “Let’s celebrate!”

But Ivy was already asleep on the couch. In a deep, deep, well-deserved sleep.

The next day, Amari made her deal. The movie was a go. It would take a few months for the contracts to be drawn up, but the movie was officially a green light. Ivy was ecstatic at how her professional life was finally moving forward. And her personal life had suddenly gotten a big green light too.

When Drew’s family invited her to their ski house in Mammoth Mountain for a week of spring skiing, Ivy jumped at the opportunity. Drew worked a lot during the day, while Ivy went out skiing with his brother and sister. Each night they gathered for dinner, and it was a lovefest. Ivy was starting to feel really connected to Drew’s family.

That night in their shared bedroom, Drew held her tight as he told her, “I really like spending time with you.”

“Me too.”

“Oh, you like spending time with yourself,” Drew joked.

“Ha-ha. You know what I mean.”

“You spend a lot of time at my apartment,” he whispered.

“Maybe I should pay rent.” Ivy laughed.

“Actually, I was thinking maybe we should move in together. We could find a bigger place in DTLA.”

Ivy nodded. She knew that DTLA meant Downtown LA. And she was open to the idea. “Let’s look at a few places before the movie starts,” Ivy said.
