“Sucks for the detectives.”

“Totally sucks.”

The moment I slip into my coat and set the other on the rack, Aubree opens the glass door with a flourish and grins as I pass through.

“We’re going to Tim’s for dinner, right?” she presses.

“You can. And since it’s so close to my place, I can even walk with you. But I’m going home.”

“Don’t be such a grump. Consider dinner a continuation of my training today. In fact, by doing so, you could charge our meal to the yearly budget. Or at the very least, claim it as a tax deduction.”

Lifting a brow, I glance to my right as we approach the elevator. “So not only are you trying to coerce me into a dinner I don’t want, but now you’re suggesting I pay for it?”

“Well, gosh, Doctor.” She steps in and hits the button for the ground floor. “That’s such a sweet offer. I’dloveto have a dinner meeting with you. And since Tim’s is an institution, chances are our handsome detectives Malone and Fletcher will be there too. We can tell them our findings on Sarah Smart’s death. More legitimacy to your tax return.”

“Pass.”Detectives Malone and Fletcher possibly being at Tim’s is the very reason I have no intention of going there.“I’ll email the report to them in the morning. They can set up a time to meet withyou, you can present our discoveries, and that’ll be the end of that case. Easy.”

“Uh-huh. Can I ask you something?” The moment our elevator stops at the bottom and the doors open, my eyes go to Aubree as she adds, “Something super professional and integral to my position at George Stanley.”

“Sure.” I walk fast and head through the revolving glass door at the front of the building. “What’s up?”

“Was Detective Malone as amazing in bed as he seems?”

My eyes whip to hers and haze over with red.

My second-in-charge cackles and bounds into the cold before I can hit her. “He just seems like he knows what he’s doing. And you seem to be no-nonsense and not wishy-washy in your needs.”

“Wishy-washy?”

“Notwishy-washy,” she reiterates. “I feel like it was a clash of the titans, and maybe you guys just bossed each other around the whole time. But in a super sexy, satisfying way.”

“I’m not discussing this with you.” Crossing my coat at the front and folding my arms to keep out the cold, I charge through the evening chill and head toward home. “I’m never discussing this with you. And if you ask again, I’m finding me a new pathologist to train.” I glance up and smile. “The first body we work on together will be yours.”

“Grump.”
