“I wouldn’t trap anybody!” She laughed and put her hand on her neck, pretending outrage. “I’m only trying to get him to admit his feelings for me. If he happens to think of marriage after that, then I’ll let him do that too.” She hugged Nash tightly, taking the breath out of him with her forceful grip. He got a good whiff of her sweet lavender perfume. When she came away, the earring was back in Nash’s hand. Man, she was scary. She stood up and blew him a kiss. “Keep the basket,” she sang and gathered her high heels.

He took a deep breath and tried again. “Your father would kill West for going after you.”

“Don’t you fret none. I got Daddy wrapped around my little finger.”

He’d never heard a grown woman refer to her father as “Daddy” with a straight face, but then again, Eva was still a baby. “You’re too young for West.”

“Says you! You worry about your love story and I’ll worry about mine!” There was that twang again, very subtle, but it always came out with her passion. Lizardman let out a whine and dashed after her. She scooped him up with a manicured hand.

“Hey!” he called over to her. “Are you taking Lizardman hostage?”

“Yes… he’s not riding on your motorcycle home. What are you, twelve? It’s far too dangerous. Byeeee!” She waved over her shoulder and walked down the hill in her bare feet before hopping into her BMW.

He stared after her as she drove away.

So… he was supposed to show Emily how much she needed him, but what could he offer her?

Well,himself, for starters.

He laughed at the idea and made himself another sandwich. The rodeo was tomorrow. He’d have to do better than that.
