My eyes widened in shock. “What?”

He kissed me again and laughed under his breath. “I love you. I loved you before you broke things off, and I still do. You’re everything I want, and more than I imagined. And I will say it over and over again so you believe me. I promise that I will be here to take care of you.”

I stared at him, my mouth agape. He loved me. I had wondered, and even hoped, but now there was no denial. “I think . . . I might lo—”

He kissed me to cut me off. “Don’t say it just because I did. When you say it, I want you to know. Not think.”

I nodded. Did Iknowthat I loved him? Right now, I didn’t know much. I was exhausted and weak, and I needed to sleep and recover. Maybe it was better to save these emotional declarations for another day.

He kissed me once more, then lifted himself off the bed. “Sweet dreams.”

I smirked. “I don’t think I’ll be able to sleep now.”

He laughed out loud. “We’ll talk in the morning. For now, just know that I love you and I’ll be here in the morning.”

“What about your stuff? And my car?” I asked.

He shook his head. “Don’t worry about all that. I’ve got it figured out. Just sleep.”

I nodded. “Thank you.”

He smiled. “Good night, my love. I’ll see you in the morning.”

For the first time in a long time, I immediately drifted off to sleep, and I knew Scott would be there when I woke up.
