Chapter Three

Josie

The last week has felt like a dream come true. I’m floating on a freaking cloud. The app has been a tremendous success, with thousands of downloads and positive reviews already pouring in.

A few bugs have been reported, but it’s all been just minor stuff, none of the horrible nightmare scenarios I’d conjured in my head.

I’m so proud of it. All that work, and now we’re really up and running. I’m still kind of wrapping my head around the knowledge that because of this project I’ve poured my soul into, people are finding love.

In spite of being a widow at 26, I’m still sort of the cheesy romantic type. I can’t help it. My parents are the type who are still blissfully in love after 30-plus years together, and I was raised on a steady media diet of happy endings. So getting to be the one responsible for new love in the world kind of makes me feel like a fairy godmother or something, and I love it.

I lean back in my desk chair, enjoying the pops along my stiff spine as I stretch and let out a happy sigh. I’m finishing up for the day, and once I’m done here, I’m headed to a movie with Sofia, and I’ve been looking forward to it.

My work chat lights up with a new notification and I click it. It’s a message from my head developer, Wyatt, asking if he can bug me for a brief call.

I know it shouldn’t, but it makes my nerves spike. Hopefully he’s not delivering bad news. I type back sure, and wait. Within 30 seconds, the program starts ringing and I hear shuffling over my speakers. “Hello?”

“Hi, Boss, how’s it going?”

“Wyatt, I keep telling you, just call me Josie,” I remind him.

“Sure thing, Boss.”

I snicker. “What’s up?”

“Well, looks like we’re all set for the first patch, we can launch that update whenever you’re ready for it.”

“Awesome, let me take a look at something,” I murmur, then open a tab to view some of the analytics from the first week, “I’d like to get it going before the high-traffic times if we can…” I glance at the clock.

“It’s about 3:30 now, and according to my report, we typically get a pretty big flood around 5:30,” I observe aloud, “Although there’s pockets of activity in other areas based on time zones and whatnot.”

I realize that I’m not exactly giving Wyatt useful information, instead sort of just thinking out loud, and that a decision needs to be made. “You know what, I think our best bet is to just roll it out as soon as possible. It’s not so big that the app will be down long, right?”

“Nah, the update shouldn’t take more than about three minutes unless a user’s got a crappy connection or something.”

“Okay, do you think you guys can launch it at 4:00?”

“Absolutely.”

“Perfect. Let’s go for it, get those updates out and hopefully that’ll patch at least the majority of the issues.”

“It should, I went over that list you gave me and I’m pretty sure we got it all taken care of.”

“I knew you would,” I smile, “Because you’re the best.”

“Yeah, you’d be lost without me,” he teases, but he doesn’t know how true the words are.

I’ve learned some about programming over the last few years while developing this, but I’d be completely helpless without the rest of the team. “Thanks, Wyatt. Did you need anything else before I’m out for the day?”

“Nah, Josie, I’m good, thanks,” he replies, “The update should be pretty easy, Arturo and I will roll it out and then we’re probably done for the day, too.”

“Sounds like a plan. You have a good night, okay? If you need anything, text me and I’ll get back to you, but I’m gonna be at the movies for a little while.”

“You got it. Have fun!”

With that, we both hang up and I log off the computer. I need to get going if I’m gonna meet Sofia on time, so I grab my purse and head out the door.

The movie is great, and the two of us share a massive bucket of popcorn. Even so, I’m getting hungry by the time we walk out, and I suggest that we grab some dinner.
