He stepped right into my apartment and looked around. “I could ask you the same. I’m texting and knocking.”

“I was sleeping,” I said.

“Sleeping?”

“Yeah. I was sleeping. I’m tired. I had a long day.”

“Doing what?”

“Planning.”

“What are you planning now, Madison?”

“Nothing,” I said. “Nothing you need to know or worry about. I know how much you hate when I have a dream.”

“Don’t be like that,” my father said. “I came by to check on you. There’s a lot happening right now.”

“Please…”

“It’s okay,” he said. “I know this isn’t easy for you. I’m sorry if I’m not always available to talk. I’m here now.”

I glanced back at my bedroom.

“Not now,” I said. “I’m not talking about anything.”

“Why not, Madison? It’s okay to talk about her. I blame myself for this. I shut down after she…”

“Please, don’t do this,” I said.

“I have to,” my father said. “I taught you how to hold things in. I regret that. Let it out, Madison. Be mad at me. Miss her. Talk about her. Especially now with-”

“I promise, I’m okay right now,” I said. “I’m just taking it easy.”

“I just don’t want you to fall back into old habits either.”

“What does that mean?”

“Madison,” he said in a deep fatherly tone.

“Father,” I growled back at him.

“You know what happened with the last team I was with,” he said.

I looked back at my bedroom door again.

If Maverick was standing on the other side of the door, that meant he heard everything being said.

Which was terrible.

Maverick and I had an arrangement that worked because we both controlled what we wanted from each other. There was no personal stuff. At least not deep personal stuff.

And here was my father, showing up to prove he cared, wanting to babble about everything I didn’t want Maverick to know.

“Madison,” my father said again. “What’s wrong with you? Are you drunk? Did you take some pills or something?”

I had no choice but to…

“I have my period,” I said.
