So I had to back away and stop that sort of kiss from happening again.

“You really like that move, huh?” Maverick asked. “Taking a kiss and then backing away as though it meant nothing. It’s sexy watching you fight off being vulnerable. Unless, of course, I’m touching between your legs. Then you just give it all up.”

“And at some point you should take the hint at what that means,” I said.

“Let’s find out,” he said.

He pulled me closer to him again.

This time when he kissed me, his tongue gently swept across my lips, parting them.

I groaned and kissed him back.

Then I broke the kiss again.

“What now?” Maverick whispered.

“I’m nervous about this wedding gig, okay? That’s why I hung up on you. That’s why I was a bitch on the phone.”

“Are you sure that’s the only reason?”

“That’s the reason I’m telling you.”

“But you don’t want me to remind you how good you are at taking pictures, right? And that while you’re doubting yourself now you’re going to enjoy this. And it’s going to be a really awesome thing for you to experience and run with. I mean I’m not going to tell you that because I know it’ll just make you mad at me.”

“See? That’s all I needed to hear,” I said. “Now you’re starting to understand me a little bit better.”

“Good,” Maverick said.

He kissed me again.

I had no intention of breaking the kiss this time.

But this time Maverick broke the kiss.

“Look, if we’re being real for a second, I came here to see you before I left because there’s a chance I’ll miss you,” he whispered.

I grabbed his face. “Now why the fuck would you say something like that to me?”

“Want me to leave?”

“Yes,” I said. “After we’re done.”

I jumped up and he caught me.

He held me tight.

This time when we started to kiss, we didn’t stop.

And there was no more talking.

We only spoke in groans, moans, sighs, whimpers, and grunts.
