Chapter Twenty-Eight

MAVERICK

She wore a black dress that left nothing to the imagination.

The perfect kind of color and dress choice for the wedding.

She blended right in yet was still dressed up and looked beautiful.

As I hung outside the large tent and watched her move, taking pictures, I felt myself feeling more and more at home.

I forgot about the game.

The two games, actually.

I had already gotten in touch with Remi, letting him know I needed to just get out of there. I needed to clear my head.

For me to get pulled in the first period of a game was completely unheard of.

My actions would come with consequences.

I’d have to tell the team I was sorry for leaving them like I did. I would have to talk to Coach personally and accept any kind of punishment he had for me. Which I had an idea of what it would be.

Two things.

First? I’d have to talk to Alonso.

Madison’s father.

My jaw tightened as Madison walked ten feet away from me.

She didn’t look at me but she knew I was looking at her.

She smiled and tucked her hair behind her right ear.

Then she crouched down next to the dance floor and got some pictures of who I assumed to be the flower girl and ring bearer.

So back to my thoughts.

I’d have to talk to Alonso.

I figured he would understand the feeling I was going through.

Maybe.

The bigger issue was whatever was about to be said about me in the media.

That I left my team hanging. That I played like shit. That I took off and was weak. Acting like a baby.

I prided myself on being quiet, calm and cool.

I looked at Madison again as she stood back up.

She casually looked over her right shoulder and bit her bottom lip.

I nodded.

There was no quiet, calm and cool near Madison.
