Chapter Thirty-Five

MADISON

It was mildly satisfying seeing Lay scream and claw at his face when Maverick soaked him with the pepper spray.

Lay fell against the wall and screamed.

Maverick closed in on him.

“Don’t ever say that again,” Maverick said. “This isn’t a fucking joke.”

“I know!” Lay cried. “I’m sorry! I won’t say a thing!”

Maverick grabbed Lay’s shirt and he pushed him into the showers.

“Get washed off,” Maverick said. “Sorry for spraying you. But I will always defend Madison. Got it?”

“Got it,” Lay said.

Lay stumbled into the showers and Maverick turned to face me again.

He was blinking fast from being too close to the pepper spray.

My eyes were starting to water too.

“Madison,” he said.

“No,” I said. “I need a minute to think.”

I pushed by Maverick and hurried into the main part of the locker room.

I stood right on theApple Catslogo.

Maverick was right behind me.

“I have to get out of the arena,” I said. “I have to keep thinking.”

“I’ll go with you, sweetie,” Maverick said. “We’ll talk this out.”

I turned and shook my head. “We can’t do that, Mav. We can’t get into the same vehicle together. You know that, right?”

Maverick gritted his teeth and swallowed hard.

“I…”

“You hate that,” I said. “You hate you can’t do that, right? But that’s what this is. This is what you signed up for.”

“Then I’ll meet you at your place,” Maverick said. “Thirty minutes?”

“Fine,” I said. “Thirty minutes.”

I tried to turn but Maverick moved for me.

His hands grabbed my hips.

I grabbed his hands.

I didn’t push him away though.
