Chapter Thirty-Six

MAVERICK

Iwatched Madison sleep for a few minutes.

Face down on her bed, topless, the blanket just below her shoulder blades.

The swell of her breasts against the bed.

Her hair spread across the pillow next to her.

Her hair was the reason I was awake.

She kept throwing her hair in my face.

That was the kind of crap that made me never want to have a one-night stand spend the full night. Or if they did, I made sure we were on opposite ends of the bed.

But Madison wasn’t a one-night stand.

Grace was the one-night stand.

Madison was everything else in my life.

The good news too was that so far Lay had kept his mouth shut.

For as much of an idiot as the guy could be, my secret remained safe with him.

He didn’t look at me different. He didn’t even so much as smile at Madison either.

Everything was normal.

But in reality, it was far from normal.

Madison opened her eyes and lifted her head.

“It’s getting creepy now,” she said.

“What is?” I asked.

“You staring like that.”

“I’m not staring. I’m watching.”

“That’s just as creepy,” she said. “I’m awake, Mav.”

“You were sleeping.”

“I was pretending to sleep.”

“Why would you do that?”

“So you could have your moment,” she said. “I know what you’re doing.”

“Which is?”

“You’re standing there thinking about everything. About me. Us. Getting caught. The night we met. Where we are now. So much, Mav. I can feel it all coming off you.”

“So, you pretended to be asleep to give me my moment?”
