“I never asked you to figure anything out.”

“But I heard you say it, Madison. You fucked the goalie for the previous team your father worked for. So what happened, huh? You had a secret fling there too? Got caught? Then you bailed out of the situation, right? Your father moves here, brings you here, gives you an easy, cushy job. Right? Taking pictures of us? Is that what this all is to you? It’s a game, right? No, it’s not a game. It’s a lie. Just like the night I met you. You told me your name was Grace. I fell for that crap. How stupid am I, Madison? You lied to me from day one and I kept coming back. I kept wanting more. Thinking I could understand you. I can’t understand you. You don’t even understand yourself. And now look at this. I’m standing here, drunk, hurt, angry, and I have no clue what to do next. Maybe I should just go out and find someone else, huh? Pick up where I left off. Leave this as a little scar to remind myself what happens when a one-night stand doesn’t go away.”

“I left,” she said. “Remember that. I woke up and I left.”

“You showed right back up.”

“To do my job.”

“It’s a fake job, Madison. It’s made up. It’s so your father could keep an eye on you. But you still managed to get into bed with the goalie anyway, huh?”

“Fuck you, Maverick,” she said, her voice cracking. “Get the fuck out of my apartment right now.”

“No problem, sweetie,” I said.

I slammed the door behind me and listened as Madison quickly engaged the main lock and the deadbolt lock.

I gritted my teeth and wanted to scream.

I can’t believe I let this shit happen to me.

Falling in love was one thing…

… having your heart broken was something completely different for me to feel.
