“Come on in,” I said.

My father entered my apartment and before I shut the door, he started up.

“You quit your job,” he said.

“I moved on.”

“To what?”

“I’m finally chasing my dream,” I said. “I’m not going to back down this time.”

“You have a good thing,” my father said. “I told you, I could have gotten you more work. You could have worked for the league directly. Good pay. Benefits. Perks. You really need to think this through.”

“It’s too late,” I said. “I made my decision.”

“I can undo a decision, Madison.”

“No, you can’t. And I don’t want you to.”

“I don’t understand any of this right now.”

“I have to do this,” I said. “I have a really amazing thing going for me. I’m going to see where it takes me.”

“Taking pictures at weddings?”

“I love it. Better than taking pictures of hockey players.”

“I don’t agree.”

“You know you should keep me away from hockey players. All things considered.”

“Is that supposed to be a joke, Madison?”

“A little bit,” I said. “Just so you know, Maverick is here. He’s taking a shower.”

My father swallowed hard and his lip curled. “Okay then. I’ll get everything out of the way then.”

“What does that mean?”

“I was going to talk to him next.”

“Talk to him? About what? About me?”

“You’ll find out soon enough,” my father said.

He folded his arms and stood like a stubborn oversized child.

When Maverick walked out of my bedroom, the tension grew by tenfold.

At least Maverick was fully dressed.

That would have been interesting to see.

Maverick naked. Wearing just a towel.

It was kind of nice to think about.

But he was fully clothed.
