“Right,” Zoe said. “I can have both versions out there. Then when I play it live, I can decide how I want to do it. Madison, that’s brilliant. I love that.”
“See? You feed me coffee and horribly delicious breakfast food, and I come up with great ideas.”
“You know, I have to ask something,” Zoe said. “Why are your walls bare?”
“My walls? Bare? Is this a sexual question?”
“I’m literally talking about the walls of your apartment,” Zoe said.
“Oh,” I said. “Right. Yeah.” I looked around and shrugged. “I don’t know.”
“I remember when you moved in, you had stuff picked out.”
“Why are you bringing this up right now?”
“I don’t know. I think I’m just really tired. But I’m looking around it’s just so… it’s like it’s a staged apartment.”
“Okay then. I guess picking out stuff for the walls is a big commitment. Colors, designs, shelves, artwork. It’s a lot to think about.”
“You really can’t commit to anything, Madison,” Zoe said with a grin.
“You either need to go to sleep in my bed or leave and go home to get sleep,” I said.
“Your bed does sound nice.” Zoe took a few steps and paused. “Wait. Did you screw anyone last night? Or what about the hockey goalie? Was that here?”
I curled my lip. “The sheets are clean. Trust me.”
Zoe nodded and walked toward my bedroom.
I took another big bite of the breakfast sandwich.
I looked around my apartment.
So what if the walls were bare? So what if I didn’t want to commit to decorating the place?
It wasn’t like I couldn’t commit to anything in life…
I took another big bite and rolled my eyes.
The breakfast sandwich was almost as good as sex.
But not as good as Maverick.
I cringed.
I really had to stop comparing everything to him.
My father calledme just as I stepped out of the car.
“Don’t worry, I’m here,” I said.
“Good morning, my daughter,” he said.
“Father,” I said.
“You sound rushed.”
“I’m stepping out of a car.”
