Mary knew that. Max didn’t deserve what he did, but she couldn’t help it. Her fears had got in the way of something that wasn’t really there.

She needed to stop being so scared and confront this head-on.

A ringing started from somewhere, and Jake sighed as he got out his cell phone.

“It’s probably your mother telling me what a good time they’re having here without us.”

“I thought you would have gone to support Olivia. You’re her dad as well.”

“I was uninvited, along with all of your friends. Apparently, Olivia didn’t want me causing a scene and lowering the tone.”

“Coming from her, that’s laughable.”

“Tell me about it. I’ve all but given up on her with that attitude of hers.” Jake answered his phone. “What is it, Delia? I’m busy. Why do you want to talk to her? Of course she’s got her phone off. You and Olivia had been really rude towards her.” After a moment, he glanced over at Mary. “Do you mind if you speak with your mother just once?”

“Can I get out of it?”

“I think you might need to hear this.”

There was a slight change in tone to his voice, and Mary knew this couldn’t be good. Now she wanted to hear it. She signaled with a thumbs up to her dad, who put his phone on loudspeaker.

“She’s here, Delia. Tell her what you just told me.”

“Mary, why do you have to embarrass me? I’ve been trying to get hold of you for two weeks!”

Mary sighed.

“I think you know the reason why, Mom. Also, why would I want to talk to my mother on the day of what would have been my wedding?”

“We were uneven in the bridal party because of you.”

“What? I wasn’t even going to be in the bridal party. I wasn’t even coming!”

“You and almost half of each of the two families. Even Cody’s parents didn’t turn up.”

Jake made a sound, and Mary saw him trying to hide a smirk.

“They don’t support what he did, Mom. Also, you can’t have a wedding where everything is arranged and then just change the bride, can you? I told everyone what happened, and it’s up to them if they want to be there.”

Delia huffed.

“Honestly, you’re just useless, Mary. All Olivia wanted was a perfect wedding.”

“Not on my dime.”

Mary wondered if she should just tell her mother about everything after the wedding. She decided against it; she was curious to know what Delia wanted to say.

“Anyway, Olivia had decided to include you in the bridal party. And we managed to find another groomsman so you would have been matched up perfectly. That’s what we wanted to tell you at Mountain Ridge before you fucked off.”

“So that’s why you wanted me to tag along.”

“Of course.”

Mary exchanged raised eyebrows with her father. Had they planned to have her cornered with nowhere to go so she could agree? What was the point of that?

“Who was the groomsman you found?”

“Cody’s cousin, Lee. You’ve met him, haven’t you?”
