Mary could feel the tears prickling at her eyes. She knew that she had a problem standing up for herself, but that didn’t make her soft. She just didn’t like conflict. But that was what her mother and sister thrived on. She swallowed back the lump in her throat.

“Mom, I’m an adult, and I can make my way up to the lodge. You go and enjoy yourself with everyone else. Nobody’s going to notice me absent for a few minutes, anyway.”

“I should be waiting for you and dragging you up there.” Delia sighed and turned away. “But I’m fed up with your whining. This is meant to be about Olivia, not you.”

“You really don’t care that Olivia hijacked my wedding and my bachelorette party? Not to mention everything else.”

“You never deserved it. Who is going to stick with an old woman who can’t have kids?”

Mary flinched. Her mother might as well have slapped her with that comment.

“Why would you say that?”

“Because it’s true. If you can’t give me grandchildren, what’s the point? At least Cody will be able to have what he wants with Olivia. They’re a better couple, and you know it.” Delia stopped in the doorway and fixed a hard stare at her daughter. “Now, this is Olivia’s weekend. Stop being a brat and be happy for her. We’ve even got something to cheer you up as well, so that should make you smile for once.”

“What is it? You won’t tell me.”

“I’m not saying anything. It’s a surprise. Just don’t be ungrateful.” Delia started to close the door. “Now get moving.”

She shut the door a little too hard, which made Mary jump. A moment later, the front door opened and closed, and Mary was left with the silence ringing in her ears.

Her legs were feeling weak, and Mary staggered to her bed and collapsed onto it. How could her mother say that? She knew Mary’s infertility was a sore point. Olivia knew it, too, but she kept rubbing it in Mary’s face. They had no kindness for her at all.

She should have been more forceful. She should have stood up to her mother and sister for the first time. Then maybe she wouldn’t be here feeling absolutely miserable.

Mary couldn’t stop the tears from falling now. She buried her face in her hands and began to sob.
