I squeezed her a little tighter. “I think you’re fine right where you are.”
She giggled but didn’t make an attempt to move.
When her cell phone started ringing, I almost picked it up and threw it at the nearest wall. Her body tensed instantly and she scrambled to climb off me, my come sliding down the inside of her legs as she picked up the phone from the coffee table.
It would have been a fucking sexy sight if it wasn’t for the fact that I knew exactly who was on the other end of the line.
I clenched my teeth.
She took a deep breath. “Hello?” Her eyes met mine and she shot me a sympathetic look, mouthing the words‘I’m sorry.’She pulled her phone away and looked at the screen before placing it back to her ear. She tightened her robe around her and moved to stand by the small window that looked out onto the parking lot. “Sounds good, I can be ready.”
I felt ill. That was the only way to explain it. Jealousy and fear settled like a heavy rock in my stomach.
“I’m just gonna jump in the shower. Buzz when you get here and I’ll come down.” There was more silence before she giggled. “Like a date?”
I clenched my fists.
“Yeah, yeah. I remember.”
I pushed off the sofa and pulled my jeans up, not caring that my dick was still wet with the mixture of our releases.
“Okay, see you soon.”
She turned to face me with a deep sigh, her eyes widening when she caught the furious look on my face.
“You two sound awfully cozy,” I sneered, folding my arms across my chest.
“Really, Blizzard?” she asked, raising her eyebrow and mirroring my stance.
I took a step toward her. “You forget to mention how close you two are?”
“What are you talking about? I had to get close. I had to make him feel like we were friends. You know this.”
I shook my head. I knew it was just jealousy that had taken over. That this was what she had come here to do. What she needed to do in order to get Lane out of there and bring these guys down. But it hit too close to home. “Just like you did with us.”
She flinched back, almost as if I’d struck her. I watched as her body sagged. “I’m doing this for you. For Judge, and the club. I thought you knew that. I thought after all this that you understood.”
It was like a kick in the nuts. She was right. I’d lost it. She didn’t deserve for me to accuse her like that when I’d just talked about moving forward and past all the bullshit that had happened.
“Baby—”
“No.” She shook her head and stepped away as I moved forward. “Do you have any idea how much it kills me to do this? How much I hate that once again, I have to fake a smile and pretend to be someone else? We can’t do this if every time something happens you have to question whether I’m lying or whether you can trust me.”
“It’s not that.”
“I hurt you. And for the rest of my life, I will regret that. It’s enough that I hate myself for what I’ve done, but I don’t need you or everyone else reminding me of it.” She held her head high, but I could see the tears forming in her eyes.
I didn’t have any words. She was fucking right. If I was going make this work between us, I needed to let it go. “Baby, I’m sorry.”
“I need to get ready. He’ll be here soon, so you better go.” She turned and walked down the hall. I listened as she closed the bathroom door and turned the lock.
I wanted to go to her. But she was right. I needed to get out of here before Edge showed up and I blew everything she’d done. I found my shirt in her room, taking one last look at the bathroom door before stepping out and heading for the truck.
I needed to remind myself that there was always tomorrow. I could talk to her then. We could sort this shit out because despite my asshole tendencies, I wanted this and I wanted her. That wasn’t a question anymore.
Just make it through today.
The slip of paper sitting on my passenger’s seat taunted me. “Fuck,” I groaned out loud, slamming my hand on the steering wheel before turning the key and feeling the truck roar to life.
Dinner with my mother and Judge.
Maybe making it through today would be harder than I thought.
