Chapter Seventeen

I groaned as my cell began to buzz on the night stand.

“You better get that.” Rose giggled softly as I attempted to ignore it and bury my face into the crook of her neck. “It could be important.”

The buzzing soon stopped and I sighed in relief. My lips pressed to her jaw, and she tried to wiggle away from me as my bristles tickled her face. “If it’s important they’ll call back.” I shouldn’t have said those words because as soon as I did, the buzz started up again. I growled, kissing her one last time before rolling over and snatching my cell up and hitting the answer button. “Yeah?”

“The DNA tests came back,” Matthew said, getting straight to the point. I sat up, throwing my legs over the side of the bed. “They’re a match.”

“Fuck,” I snapped. “Have we got a name or anything to go on?”

Matthew inhaled deeply. “Yeah, Edward Dean.”

Bracing my elbows on my knees, I hung my head. “Okay, so we have something to go on. What do we know about this guy?”

“We know that he’s dead.”

“Excuse me?” I snapped, turning to look at Rose with wide eyes. She frowned. “Say that again.”

Matthew laughed, but it was void of any humor. “Edward Dean, Jayla’s father, is dead.”

Rose’s mouth fell open and I knew she’d heard what he’d said.

“How does a dead man give consent for these assholes to take custody?” I roared, pushing to my feet and pacing the room. “What the fucking hell is going on here?”

“Technically she never said he gave them consent to take custody. She said Jayla’s father never wanted to be a part of her life. Which makes sense since ol’ Edward was over thirty years Hayley’s senior and she was a minor,” he explained, his voice harsh and clearly frustrated by this clusterfuck of information. I heard him take a deep breath before he spoke again. “Look, I’m not suggesting you do anything illegal…”of course he wouldn’t,“…but we need to find out what’s in her files. She has something hidden there, she wouldn’t be contesting this if she didn’t. I need to know what it is or we’re going into this court case flying fucking blind.”

I stood a little straighter, my eyes lifting to find Rose watching me intently, a look of fear on her face. Not fear of me,no,fear of losing Jayla. I clenched my fists as I walked over to the bed, cupping her jaw in my hand and drawing her lips to mine. The kiss was soft and gentle, but when I pulled back, I knew she could see the promise in my eyes.

“Leave it to me,” I told Matthew, holding Rose’s gaze. “I’ll get what you need.”

“You’ve got less than a week, Blizzard. The more time I have to prepare, the better.”

“I’ll get it.” I hit end call and tossed my cell onto the bed.

“This is bad isn’t it?” Rose murmured, tugging the loose sheet around her body. “I bought her Christmas presents today…”

“And she will get to open them… on Christmas day… with us,” I told her sternly, taking a seat on the edge of the bed and threading my fingers into her beautiful dark locks. “She’s going to stay with us, you have to trust me.”

“I do,” she whispered, meeting my gaze.

I dipped my head, capturing her mouth with mine and pushing her back onto the bed. Pulling the sheet back, my hand grazed down her supple skin, sending electricity through my body and lighting my senses. Our tongues tangled, she always battled with me at first. She liked to stand against me because she knew that I would have to work harder, to take that role to overpower her, which she loved so much.

Rose was a strong woman. She’d been broken before and had come back fighting, but she was also soft, sweet, and liked an air of dominance. I think it makes her feel safe, knowing that there was someone in control, someone she could trust to take over, to take charge.

“I have to go,” I muttered as I scraped my teeth over her earlobe.

She groaned loudly, rubbing her naked thighs together as I continued to tease her, trailing my tongue down her neck to her collarbone. “You have to go?” she panted, one of her hands gripping my neck as the other went in search of my cock which was hardening at a record pace.

I knew as soon as she touched it I was done for, and I needed to get to the clubhouse to catch Op to see what we can do about this situation.

Wrench wasn’t in town at the moment, so he wasn’t going to be much help on the computer front. Which meant we would need to approach this differently. I pulled away, despite my body aching to take my woman again. She whimpered, sticking out her bottom lip and sulking at me as she tried to slow her breathing.

“Sorry, baby,” I slapped her outer thigh, the sound resonated in the room, and I managed to jump back before Rose’s fist connected with my arm.

“Ow!” she yelped, glaring at me.

I grinned back at her as I picked up my jeans and hauled them on followed by my shirt, hoodie and cut. It was getting cold out. Snow hadn’t fallen as of yet, but the nights were freezing. We got a few random snowfalls in winter each year, just enough to keep us off our bikes for a few days which made the whole club cranky.
