Jake pulled a face, and she could see that tears weren’t far from the surface. ‘I told Dad to come and get us, because you like Ron,’ he said. ‘And he likes you. And I want to go home.’

‘Poppet, I’ve explained this, we can’t go back. We don’t have a home there any more. Someone else owns our house now.’

‘Dad’s got a house. We can live with him.’

‘No, we can’t. The house he was living in with Sallie belonged toher, not your dad. He hasn’t got anywhere to live now, either.’

‘He can find somewhere,’ Jake persisted, but she could see that he believed her, as the tears began trickling down his cheeks.

Annabelle carried on, explaining once again, ‘Without somewhere to live, I’m not going to be able to get a job, and without a job, I can’t find us anywhere to live, so we’re stuck.’

‘Dad can get a job.’

She was tempted to say “let’s wait until he does, and we’ll see what happens then”, but she didn’t want to give Jake false hope. So she said the only thing she could, which was, ‘Jake, we arenotgoing back to Australia.’

‘Iam. I’m going back with Dad.’

The conversation had just come full circle and Annabelle could see little point in carrying on with it. She’d be better off concentrating her efforts elsewhere. which meant kicking Troy out before he had a chance to talk to Jake.

This wasn’t going to be pretty and it probably wouldn’t be easy, but she was determined that Troy had to leave.Now.
