Guilt starts creeping its way into my bones, but there’s no turning back now, regardless of what Anthony thinks. I shouldn’t feel guilty. She deserves this. Not my kindness, my compassion, my regret. I do wish I would’ve listened to Joe and used a bigger ring so she wouldn’t have to crouch when she jumps, but it’s too late to change it.

It’s just a burn. That’s the worst-case scenario for her. If she hits the metal, she’ll burn herself and fall between the platforms. She’s not going todie. It’ll be fine.

A minute passes while I stare at her before I realize I’m the one who needs the reassurance. But it’s true. Anthony would have said something by now if it wasn’t.

Amelia gapes at the platform like it’s a deathtrap, but her hands are by her side and her bare feet are spaced apart.

She’s going to do it.

“Let’s go, Kitty!” Someone shouts, and she nervously looks their way.

She bends her knees and gets in a stance like she’s about to go for it.

I shift and let my hands fall to my sides. My shoulders tense, and my eyes burn from not blinking.

She pushes off her feet, but then stumbles to a stop when she reaches the incline. It takes me a few moments to realize I’ve stopped breathing.

People boo, but this time she doesn’t turn to look at them. She backs up several steps and takes off again, this time running up the incline.

My heart stops and my eyes widen when she makes the leap. She goes through in a swimmer’s dive, and when she crashes on the other platform, her body rolls down it. Anthony strides her way while people clap. I stand still, not daring to breathe.

Anthony helps her up, and when she stands, my heart starts beating again.
