“What?” Settimo laughs. “You can’t be serious. I told you, I shouldn’t have gone behind your back, but this can be your call now. You’re not an idiot.”

“I’m not finished yet.”

Settimo’s mouth hangs open, and his eyes are wide like he can’t believe what I’m saying. He lets out a breath and lifts a hand to his head to massage his temples.

“I’ll take her to the cabin. Tonight, after I’ve dealt with the detectives. It might be a good thing if I’m away for a few days.”

“Is there something I’m missing?” he asks, not taking his hand away from his temples.

I think on it, and when he lets his hand fall and meets my eyes again, I shrug. “I know that you don’t get it, but this is personal for me. Killing her isn’t enough.”

“You made her jump through fire. Isthatnot enough?”

“No.” I say it with absolute certainty. It’s convincing. So much so, I almost believe it myself. Maybe thatisit. Maybe I’m not satisfied yet and don’t believe she’s learned her lesson.

Bullshit.

Settimo rolls his eyes. He leans forward and starts rustling through papers.

“Fine,” he says, not looking at me. “Get her out of your place and do whatever you want. Anthony and I will be here cleaning up your mess. Just get the fuck out of my office.”

I let out a sigh of relief and stand. I go to leave but pause, staring at my brother.

He glances up at me, holding a piece of paper in his hand.

“Thank you,” I say.

He nods and goes back to whatever he’s distracting himself with. Settimo always wins. He can’t stand losing, even if it means he has to cheat. This time, he let me win.

I leave the office and head to the police station. There’s plenty to get done today, but as hours pass, I find myself looking forward to tonight. I’ve never taken anyone to the cabin before, and as anxious as it makes me, I’m equally eager.
