“Well, princess, I guess you’ve died for nothing.”

“Fuck you,” I snarl.

He comes my way, and I straighten my spine. My zip tie isn’t anywhere near loose, and I pray Syrus has done a better job with his. If this doesn’t work…

Valentine gets in my face, his grin turning into a leer as he drags his eyes down to my breasts. “I’d much rather fuck you.”

I gather saliva and spit in his face. He shuts his eyes and rears back. Fury builds and seems to fill the room. I can barely breathe. He drops the frame to the floor, wipes the spit from his cheek, then he rears back and slaps me across the face.

White light bursts, and I feel the world tilting. My side hits the floor, and I let out a groan, playing the hurt little girl I will never be again.

“I’m only just beginning with you, bitch.” Valentine spits, but it hits the carpet beside me. He stomps away, and I dart my eyes, searching for the frame. I find it beneath Syrus’s foot.

I lift my eyes to him, and he points his stare at me. He lifts his foot to reveal the broken shards of glass and then kicks it toward me.

Valentine begins vomiting more bullshit to get Settimo worked up, and Nico pokes his head into the hallway, saying something to one of the men in the living room.

It’s now or never. I shift and get underneath the frame, wrestling a piece of glass out of it and clasping it in my palm. I go to get one for Syrus, but my eyes zero in on his freed hands. He holds the zip tie in one hand.

In the other is a shard of glass.
