“Woah,” Josh says, gaping. Jasmine elbows him, and he seems to recover. He sits up straight and gives his head a little shake. “What’s up, my man?” he says.

Lorenzo nods. “Nice to meet you all. Amelia has told me great things.”

“Huh,” Jasmine says, her eyes big as she gives me a teasing smile. “Amelia hasn’t told us nearly enough about you.”

“Stay!” Monica says, patting my seat. “We’d love to hear more about how you two met.”

Lorenzo looks to me, but I shake my head. “Another time guys. We gotta get home to feed the cat.”

I snort at my own joke, and my friends just look at me. They don’t know Lorenzo lives with a lion. Obviously.

I stumble, even though I’m standing still, and Lorenzo catches me. “I think that’s probably a good idea,” he says, amused. “Have a good evening.”

“Text us how she’s doing later,” Jasmine says, a little concerned. “Red Gatorade is her hangover drink.”

“Got it,” he says, helping me out of the bar.

“Do you think they know you kidnapped me?” I ask, laughing as he helps me into the car.

Lorenzo shuts the door without a response and goes around to his side. As we start down the road, I rest my head on the seat and gaze at the scar over his eye.

“I think you’re beautiful,” I say.

He glances at me and chuckles. “I think you’re drunk.”

“No.” I shake my head and unclick my seatbelt. I lean over and touch the smooth white line. “Seriously, I do.”

He grabs my hand and kisses it. “I think you’re beautiful too.”

“How was the uh… How’s Settimo?”

Lorenzo shrugs, his lips sagging. “He’s okay… busy. He’s going to be for a while.” He gives me a nervous glance. “I probably will be too. Is that all right with you?”

I roll my eyes and smile. I’ve been away from the shelter for weeks. He has no idea how busyI’mabout to be. Plus, I have a wedding to plan.

My smile widens at the thought. “Yes,” I say. “It’s fine.”

“Why are you smiling?” he asks, his own lips curving up.

I shake my head and lean close to him. I’m distracting him and I think he knows it because he pulls into an alley and parks the car.

“Because I love you,” I finally say.

He takes off his seatbelt and takes my head in his hands before crashing his lips to mine. I melt into him, my skin hot with tequila and desire. I urge him back and climb on top of him. He leans the seat back so I don’t accidentally honk the horn.

When we finally break the kiss, both of us gasping to catch our breaths, Lorenzo’s dark eyes meet mine. They gleam with emotion I know he only shows to me, and I drink in every drop. He pushes my hair back from my face and inhales my scent.

“I love you too, Kitty.”
