“No, Lorenzo, I don’t. I met her one time. We slept together and that was it. I haven’t seen her since. I still don’t understand why she’s here if you know she didn’t do anything.”

He tilts his head slightly and stares at me with something indiscernible in his eyes. I stare back, my anger growing by the second. Anger mostly at myself. I shouldn’t have jumped to conclusions about her. I should’ve paid off the press for the info from the start.

“What about when you went to her apartment? Did you forget aboutthattime?”

I stay silent.

He had me followed. Of course he had me followed. That’s how he knew about Abi to begin with.

“You keep lying for her, Colter. Time after time you assure me there are no secrets, and yet,” he lifts his hand toward Abi, “here we are.”

“Fine,” I grit out. “Tell me what you’d like to know.”

“Who is she?”

I open my mouth to tell him yet again that I don’t know who she is, but I pause. If I don’t know who she is, how will that look to Lorenzo? She has fake IDs. She slept with me under false pretenses. We’re in the middle of a close campaign. And to top it off, she’s currently a witness to my exchange with the Gruco crime family, and she’s a kidnapping victim.

He would never let her walk out of here alive.

I glance at Abi and take a breath before looking Lorenzo dead in the eyes. “She’s my fiancée.”
