“Son? You alright? Do you need me to call somebody?” The man asks me.

I noticed that he didn’t ask if I wanted to call the police. So I turn around and get a good look at the man who helped save my life. It’s an older black man wearing a security guard uniform. He stands at an average height with dark brown skin and kind brown eyes that hold a look of genuine concern.

“No, sir. I don’t need you to do anything else. I appreciate your help, though.” I say with a nod. He obviously works at the stadium, so I’m sure he knows exactly who I am. But he doesn’t seem like he is star-struck at all.

“I’m glad I was here. But I’m sure you would’ve been just fine.” He gives a nod in return.

I quickly look around for my phone, and I find it with a cracked screen, but I can still use it. So I shoot off a quick text and gather up my shit. The security guard watches me closely, but he doesn’t say anything else.

“I’ve got it from here. You don’t need to be involved any further. I’m sure you have work to do.” I pull out a card from my bag and hand it to him. “I owe you a debt. If you need anything, call me.”

I respect a man that knows how to handle his shit. The older guy never got on his walkie-talkie to call for backup, and he never freaked out. Instead, he let me do what needed to be done with a quiet calm that says a lot about him.

“Actually, I do need something. And normally, I wouldn’t ask, but this is important.” He furrows his brows and shakes his head as if contemplating what he wants to say next, “I have a daughter, Egypt. Who needs a job, a good job.” The man finally says after a moment. And I nod.

He saved my life. If his daughter needs a job, then she’ll have one.

“The job is hers. Call that number, and we’ll work out the details,” I say. My crew pulls up a few minutes later. They intentionally block the entrance to the alley and make their way toward us.

Everything will be cleaned up, and it will be like this attack never happened.

“Again, thanks for your help. You can get going now. And I’m sure you know nothing needs to be said about this incident.”

“What incident? Have a good night. I’m sure you got it from here.” He nods and walks off in the same direction he came.

He passes my men and gives them the same head nod, and disappears out of sight. I’m glad the man was here, and I will be sure to pay my debt, but now I have to figure out who in their right mind tried to kill me?
