Chapter Fourteen

MEETING WITH THE ENEMY

EGYPT

My luck today has been shit. First, the man who I thought was finally beginning to accept that we were falling in love shattered my heart into a million fucking pieces. How could he say such disrespectful shit?

I left the building all out of sorts. My mind was all over the place, thinking about what I should’ve done differently. I was so distracted that I didn’t even see who grabbed me from behind when I went to unlock my door.

It was broad daylight, and somebody snatched me right off my front porch. I didn’t even get a chance to scream before a hand went over my mouth, and a gun was pressed to my temple. I thought I was dead. I thought this person would kill me right where I stood.

I already knew why this was happening. I’m not stupid. People will use you as a pawn when you work so close to a powerful man. It was one of Giovanni’s biggest fears. My safety was important to him, and that’s why he placed guards on me.

Now, I’m wondering what happened to Joey and Carlo. I’m wondering how anyone will ever know what happened to me. I’m wondering if my daddy knows just how much I love him. I’m wondering if Alexa, Smith, and Ari know how my life was enriched because of them. And I’m wondering if Giovanni knows even though his words hurt me, I still love him with all that I have.

I don’t know where I am or how long I’ve been locked in this room. I was blindfolded after I was forced into a car. I was so scared that I couldn’t tell how long I was in the car or where we went.

Every now and then, I hear men speaking in Italian. At least, I think that’s the language. I can’t really hear what they’re saying because the words are muffled, but the nuances and cadence of their voices sound like they’re speaking Italian.

A door opens up, and I tense up. There’s a reason that I’m still alive. I just don’t know what it is yet. If they didn’t want something from me, they would’ve killed me on my porch. No, these people definitely want only what I can give them.

“Egypt King. It’s nice to make your acquaintance finally.” I don’t recognize the voice of the man speaking, so now I’m really scared.

Who the fuck is that!

“Stand her up and remove the fucking blindfold off her eyes, you idiots! If anyone saw you bring her here, they would know something was up. Fucking morons!” The guy is livid, and I do my best not to jump at his yelling.

Someone grabs my arm and stands me up before the blindfold is quickly removed from my eyes. It takes a minute for my vision to adjust even though the lighting is dim. When my eyes are finally clear enough to see, a man with slicked back light brown hair and dead dark brown eyes is standing in front of me.

I study him without saying anything. He seems like the type that wants to make some kind of speech so I can know the exact reason I’m here. So, I patiently wait for him to tell me.

“I’m Salvador Mancini.” The name sends a cold chill through my body.

I don’t know much about this man personally, but I know that he’s been trying to sabotage Giovanni since I’ve been working for him. I don’t know what the bad blood is about between them, but if I’m here, then it’s definitely escalated to the point of no return.

“I was told that you are the person I need to talk to about Giovanni DeLuca’s businesses. More specifically, how they operate.” Salvador leans against a desk, and I notice we are in an office. I stay standing because I have no idea what’s coming.

“Mr. Mancini,” I say in the most respectful tone I can muster for this asshole, “I don’t handle Mr. DeLuca’s businesses. I keep track of his schedule. I’m just a glorified secretary.”

Salvador throws his head back and gives a hearty laugh. However, I can hear that it’s forced, and even though I have never seen this man in my life, I know he’s on the edge.

“Oh, sweetheart. I don’t think you give yourself enough credit. I’ve heard of bosses having affairs with their… what did you call yourself…” Salvador looks up like he’s deep in thought. “Yes, a secretary. But it’s more than an affair. Isn’t that right, Ms. Lambert?”

I’m shocked when Carly steps into the room from behind Salvador and sashays around the desk. But when she kisses his lips, I can’t hide my surprise. I thought the stupid bitch was in jail. Daniel said they were all arrested.I guess their connections paid off after all.

Carly sneers when her eyes land on me. I see the hit coming before she tries to slap me. I lean back, and she misses my cheek, but she doesn’t get another chance because I rear back and try my best to slap the taste out of her mouth.

Carly grabs her red cheek, and her face scrunches into a mask of fury. I know right away that I might die here, but I will die fighting this bitch because I won’t stand here while she attacks me.

“You uppity black bitch! You think you can hit me! Me!” She screams, but when she lunges, Salvador catches her.

“Calm down,” Salvador laughs, but Carly is still trying to get at me.

“You can’t just let her attack me! I won’t stand for this,” Carly sneers, and the hate I see in her gaze is almost blinding.

“I said calm the fuck down!” Salvador shouts, and Carly stops fighting. But her eyes are still narrowed as she stares at me.

“You let this whore secretary hit me. Kill her! She needs to finally know her fucking place.”
