TB bursts out laughing. “Yeah, I do.” He looks around. “How long before the boys from Portland make it over here?”

“They’re on their way. It’ll be done by the end of the day.” He bends to pick up something else, and I put a steadying hand on his shoulder. “Fingerprints, remember? I shouldn’t have touched the coffee table or picture frame.”

TB fixes me with a look. “No, you shouldn’t have, which means you don’t expect to find anything, do you?”

To those who don’t know me, I come across as the fun-loving, goofy guy, but I happen to be very good at my job. This isn’t lost on TB.

“No. I’m thinking whoever they were… they were professionals.”

“Someone looking for dirt on Kris?”

Not wanting to worry him, I nod. “Yep.”

TB takes two steps toward the front door, then turns and looks at me. “You’ll call me when they’re done?”

“Yeah, and I’ll call Mr. Roberts at the hardware store to replace the front door and lock. Maybe Shannon could help clean up this mess?”

TB keeps walking, giving me a thumbs up. “She’ll be beside herself, wanting to help. I swear she’s more excited about the wedding than Athena. Anything to get close to Hollywood’s hottest couple.”

He walks out and down the treacherous path which leads to Athena’s home. I watch him go, and the knot in my stomach grows bigger. Athena hasn’t been the same since Kris’ accident. It’s like her nerves are frayed. One look at her, and you can tell something’s not right, but she hasn’t said what. I haven’t wanted to push her over the telephone, but when I fly out next week, she and I will have a sit-down.

This break-in doesn’t feel right.

I’ve been here often enough to know nothing is missing. Whatever they were looking for, I hope they didn’t find it.
