“There aren’t any rugs?”

Kris smiles. “Underfloor heating. Take off your shoes. The house should’ve started to warm them up.”

Doing as I’m told, I sit on the couch, undo my sneakers, and take them and my socks off. Slowly, I pad around the room, enjoying the warm feeling of the floors.

Pointing over my shoulder, I ask, “What’s through there?”

There are two barn doors. Kris walks to one and pushes it open, revealing a walk-in closet. He opens the other door to showcase a magnificent bathroom. Ignoring the walk-in closet, for now, I enter the master bath. In the middle, at the far end, is a claw-foot bathtub overlooking the front of the property. The entire room is also painted white except for the bathtub, which has a white interior and a black exterior. The double vanity has the same marble on the counters as in the kitchen. It all looks very sleek but in a country-gentrified way.

“Why don’t you spend more time here?”

Kris meets my eyes in the ornate mirror. “I’ve always thought of this as a family home. I’ve never even had… friends out here.”

He’s got his hands in his pockets and looks almost sheepish. Turning, I put my hands on his chest.

“No one?” Kris shakes his head. Stretching up on my tiptoes, I kiss him. “Good. Thisis ourplace, no ghosts of girlfriends past.”

Kris puts his arms around me. “Wanna fool around?”

“I’m hungry.”

His lips turn down. “I’m not sure if there’s any food.” He entwines his fingers with mine. “But let’s go find out. I know there’s plenty of alcohol.”

“Woman can’t live on alcohol alone.”

“Depending on what you drink, it could be described as a vegetable or a fruit.”

Laughter bubbles up and out of me. “Right. Did that even work on your dad when we were kids?”

Kris chuckles. “Nope.”
