Dex takes the stick away from him. He and Simon were playing this game, and Matt just kinda jumped in for a minute.
He leans next to the table Link is sitting at and speaks to Matt. “I mean, she’s not off limits, per se, but more like it would be wise to keep your love life away from work life, ya know?”

I open my mouth to reply but then close it. I need to get my thoughts together.
“Yeah, yeah, don’t shit where you eat. I got it.” Matt nods in agreement. Christ, this kid. Heaven forbid he gets his own happily ever after someday. People are going to want to smack him. “But was she off limits at one point? Did one of you screw her?”
I want to punch him. I’m going to do it.
“Hold me back, Ben,” I mutter under my breath.
Ben, who’s next to me, says, “I want to punch him too, man.”
“Jesus, kid,” Simon sneers. “Stop being disrespectful. Bernie is a lady. And no, none of us did anything with her. But when we started the team, we all agreed that she’s our teammate and that’s it. She became like a sister, too important to us and to the team to mess around with. We’d never want to risk losing her.”
Matt chews on that for a few seconds. I do as well. And while I knew all of that, I’m annoyed that they didn’t give this dumbass kid the same warning they gave me all those years ago. “So what you’re saying is, she’s not off limits, but I probably shouldn’t go there.”
“Exactly, my man. You’ve got it.” Link jumps up and motions to a nearby server.
“Cool, cool.” Matt keeps on nodding. I can tell by his fucking face that he isn’t getting it and is probably still going to pressure Bernadette.
And the thought of that makes my blood boil. I wonder if she knows he has a crush on her.
Absentmindedly, I rub at my chest. I wonder what the guys would say if Matt did end up hooking up with Bernadette. I realize that I don’t want to freaking know. I look at my watch, ready for this night to be over.
