“Was your door not locked?” He steps through the threshold.

“Oh, I don’t… No, I guess it wasn’t.”

“Your door’s normally locked when you’re home, yeah?” Wade drops the brown paper bag of food on the table and shrugs out of his light jacket.

I look down at the doorknob as I close the door.

Huh. Don’t I normally lock my door?

“You know, I’ll be honest, I think I lock it most of the time.” I chuckle off the concern. “I should probably pay more attention.”

Wade clicks his tongue. “Please do. I know this building is safe, but you should keep your door locked at all times.”

I meet him at the table and give him a kiss on the cheek.

“I’ll be better, I promise.” He smiles, letting it go. “What did you bring me?”

“I remember you mentioned last week how much you crave a good fried rice. Well, there’s this little hole-in-the-wall Japanese place near work. They have the best fried rice. So I brought us chicken and steak, and you can figure out which you like better.” He pulls out two large containers, and my mouth salivates when the aroma of the rice hits the air.

“You’re amazing,” I say, walking into the kitchen for two forks and bottles of water.

He chuckles.

The way we sit down to eat dinner, the easiness of it all, it’s as if we’ve been doing this for years, not weeks.

When I’m just about done devouring the steak fried rice, which has been determined the winner for the night, my phone rings.

Flipping my phone face up, I see that it’s a number I don’t recognize. I hit the ignore button and turn it back over on the table.

“Who was that?” Wade asks between bites.

“I don’t know. I’ve gotten an abundance of calls this week, like a few a day. Two different numbers, but no one leaves a message so…”

“You should answer it. I’m gonna guess it’s probably some old dude thinking he’s dialing a different number. And if it’s a telemarketer, ask them to remove you from their list.” Finished eating, he pushes his plastic food container toward the middle of the table. “You should also check to make sure your number is still on the National Do Not Call Registry.”

I blink. “The what?” I ask.

He blinks back at me.

“That’s a real thing? I thought it was, like, a joke or something.” I giggle at the look on his face.

He narrows his eyes. “Okay. You’re funny.” He cracks a smile.

I lean over and kiss his nose. “Thank you for not treating me like an idiot when I’m being an idiot. But I do know about the list, and I put my number back on it last week.”

I grab our trash and toss it. I pout a little when I realize there won’t be leftovers.

Wade pulls out a piece of gum from his pocket and shoves it into his mouth. I smirk to myself. Who wants to make out with fried rice breath?

Not Wade.

I excuse myself to use the bathroom and do a quick teeth brushing while I’m in there.

A girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do.

Wade’s made himself comfortable on the couch, and I plop down next to him. His arm automatically goes around my shoulder and pulls me into him.

He clicks over toStranger Thingsand starts the show. Shamefully, the show runs for less than ten minutes before it’s forgotten about.
