Dex: No, in the game room. What’s up?

Me: Thought you were taking today off.

Dex: Simon wanted to show Link and I some new gear one of his sponsors sent him.

I run my hand through my wet hair. I wanted to talk to Dex alone, but maybe I can kill two birds with one stone. Simon is a non-issue since he already knows.

Me: K. Need to chat. Be up in a few.

Dex: Everything okay?

Me: Yup.

I leave it at that. No need to put the guy on edge before I can rip the Band-Aid off. I dress and head over to the game room. Before I knock, I center myself.

It’s gonna be fine.

I knock, hearing the guys inside. There’s some shuffling, and the door swings open.

“Don’t you have a key?” Link asks, walking away from the wide-open door.

“I do, but I didn’t want to interrupt anything. I know how the three of you get when you spend too much time apart.” One of the best things in life is fucking with Link. While Dex and I almost always get along, Link is the annoying, obnoxious little brother I never wanted. I wouldn’t change it for the world, though.

“They’re just so fucking cute. I’m addicted to their lovin’.”

“Gross,” I mutter and grin at my brother.

“What’s up, man?” he says. He’s sitting on the big leather couch in what would normally be the dining room if the space wasn’t open concept. Dex had some walls knocked down, which makes the space a massive room that occupies thousands of dollars of top-of-the-line equipment and a place the team sometimes spends more hours in than their own apartments. Simon is at his desk, fiddling around with something. Link plops down next to Dex. I take one of the chairs across from them.

“We need to talk,” I start.

He smirks. “Yeah, that’s what you said.”

I suck in a breath. “It’s about Bernadette.”

Both Dex and Link straighten, concern filling their faces. “No, nothing is wrong. She’s fine.” They both relax. “It’s just that… we’re seeing each other.”

Dex’s eyebrow creases. Link snorts.

I don’t hear anything from Simon, but again, he already knows.

Calmly, Dex asks, “As in you’re dating?”

“Yes, well, more than that. We’re past that. We’re an item.”

Fuck. An item? Why am I so nervous?

“An item?” Link mocks. “What are you, fifty or something?”

I shoot a glare his way but address Dex. “She’s my girlfriend.”

He leans back in his seat, studying me. He doesn’t look pissed, but he doesn’t look overjoyed.

“Say something,” I mutter.

“I got words,” Link chirps. I ignore the comment.

“I guess I don’t understand why you’re telling us. Now.” He rubs the side of his nose.
