Page 26 of Summer Cursed

“Unlikely,” I lied… to us both. “Why are you here?”

His grin widened as his eyes roamed over my body before meeting mine again. “Show me the box you received.”

I paused, silently debating it for a moment before stepping aside to let him enter the house. “It’s on the table.”

He stared at the box for a bit before removing the bow and lifting the lid. “Just as I suspected.”

I sidled up beside him and peered at the contents of the box. “What the hell? How is this possible?”

“I heard from the other women last night. They also received chocolates right before their assaults.”

“Uh-huh, but Chris is dead,” I said, looking up at him. “Isn’t he?”

“He is. However, I spread the word about the chocolates, just in case. I also received calls this morning from another woman in my pack and two in the Winter pack right after that. They all received boxes just like this one.”

I stared down at the innocent looking candies nestled in their little paper cups.

“Fuck.”

“Precisely.”

Something occurred to me then. Something I should have realized earlier. “You haven’t mentioned any women from my pack.”

“I noticed that as well,” he said.

“Until now. Until me. Why would they leave the Summer pack out of it?”

“I don’t know, but you should speak with your Alpha.”

I glared at him. “His name is Isaac.”

He smirked. “I know.” He laughed at my growl. “Let’s get back to business, Red. Would you allow me to take this to my lab?”

I nibbled my lip while I decided. His eyes lowered to watch me, and remembering that he’d asked me about the habit, I stopped. “Only if I can come with you.”

“Sure, but you’ll have to change first. You can’t go dressed like that.”

“This is the second time you’re telling me what to wear.”

He furrowed his brow. “Second time?”

“Yes, Philip told me to dress ‘appropriately’ for dinner.” As the words left my mouth, I remembered he said he wasn’t the one who had invited me. Which I assumed meant he had nothing to do with the wardrobe suggestion. “Well, maybe it’s not the second time. Regardless, I don’t appreciate being told how to dress.”

“I apologize if Philip offended you. I don’t know why he would have done that. My request is merely for your safety while in the lab.” His gaze lowered to my legs before slowly roaming over my body until he met my eyes again.

I sneered at him. I refused to let him know how he affected me. “Okay then. I’ll change. Are jeans okay?” I asked looking at his slacks and button-down shirt.

“Yes, jeans are fine.” His lips pulled into a smirk, and he leaned in closer to me. “For the record, I like the way you dress.”

“Hmmph, I’m sure you do,” I grumbled, making my way back to my room.

Ten minutes later we were on the highway heading east. Still thinking about his kiss, I stared out the passenger window and nibbled the crap out of my lip. Liam seemed content in the silence, so we didn’t speak for the entire forty-five-minute ride.

The unnamed building was four stories of darkly tinted glass with a manned security gate blocking the entrance to the parking lot. Liam showed his badge and drove through the gates to a spot reserved just for him. Of course, he had his very own spot.

“So, when you said your lab, you meant your lab.”

“Yes.”
