Isaac and Liam shared a look, but Liam spoke. “Discussing a patient with you would be unethical. If Stella didn’t share the information with you, it was not my place to do so.”

“I hate when you’re logical.”

He laughed a little. “You hate when I’m right.”

I stuck my tongue out at him. “Okay. Is that all? Are there anymore bombshells you guys need to drop on me? Is Stella really an alien with six boobs? Does she run a brothel for humans to secretly screw shifters?” I said the last bit to be just as ridiculous as the six boobs but something about it hit home. “Shit. That might be what’s going on. I don’t mean the screwing part. I mean what if she’s like selling them as pets to wealthy humans? The treatment you’re giving her dad can’t be cheap.”

“It’s not cheap, but I’m not charging her family. Money is not the reason behind whatever it is she’s doing. At least not as far as her family is concerned. I’ve put them up in a house near the hospital, so they don’t have to worry about housing costs either.”

“Did you know about that?” I asked Isaac wondering how he could hate someone who was doing so much for our friend—former friend.

“No. Stella didn’t tell me any of that. She made it sound like they were all struggling.”

Liam cleared his throat. “I asked her not to divulge that information. I don’t want everyone thinking I give handouts.”

“Then why do it for her?” I asked.

“Out of deference to you.”

“Say what? Her parents moved over three months ago. We hadn’t even spoken to each other yet.”

He shrugged. “We should be going. We need to go to that address,” he said. “Stephens, it’s been fun as usual. Take care.”

“I want to come with you guys,” Isaac said.

Liam studied him for a bit. “If it’s okay with Ember, it’s fine with me.”

They turned to me. “Yeah, it’s cool with me. Let’s go.”
