“Put your foot on the brake,” he said.

Once he showed me a couple of things and pointed out that the screen also helped, I was on my way to Stella’s house.

“Damn this thing is fast,” I said, enjoying the speed.

I loved my Prius, but the Tesla was way more fun to drive. We got to her house in record time. Her car wasn’t in her driveway, but I insisted on going inside.

“Isaac, do you have her key? I left mine at the house.”

“Yeah,” he said, pulling his keyring out of his pocket.

We searched her tiny house, even the attic, but she wasn’t there. I let out a frustrated growl. As we were leaving, I noticed something on the dining room table. A plain white envelope with my name written in Stella’s handwriting.

It’s over, Ember. You’re too late. Do you think that was my only set up? You’ll never find me now. But I will see you soon for the big surprise.

“This bitch. What the hell does she even mean?” I asked passing the note to Liam. “Do you have someone that can check plane records?”

“Yes,” Liam said taking out his phone.

“Of course you do.” I laughed a little wondering how the hell he had so many contacts in so many industries.

All we could do was wait to see if Stella had boarded a plane to anywhere in the world. I kept trying to figure out where she could be hiding out. She’d led a very boring life… Or so I had thought.

“Are there any BDSM clubs around here?” Isaac and Liam both looked at me at the same time. “I mean to see if she’s hanging out at one. It’s the only interest I know she has other than whatever she was pretending to like while we were friends.”

Isaac turned to Liam. “You’re the man with all the hookups. See what you can find.”

Liam sent another round of texts and slid the phone in his pocket. “Until we have a lead, we need to go about our lives. Carefully. We all have work to do, and I have men I pay to do the rest. So, let’s go home.”
