And Rafe seemed to read hermind.

His pace began to quicken, and her back slammed harder against the wall. She cried out at the force of it but did not want him to stop. The fierceness of his thrusts electrified her, sending shockwaves of pleasure through her core. The need for him built to a burning crescendo, and soon she was screaming his name as her nails raked down hisback.

He paused, caressing her shoulders and her breasts as the pleasure shook through her core. When her pulsing slowed, Rafe thrusted inside her once again until he finished only a moment later, emptying his seed into herbody.

They stood there like that for long moments, just clinging onto one another, as if they were each other’s lifelines in a scary, cruel world. And then, slowly, he lowered her to the floor, kissing her neck as he murmured words too soft for Bree tohear.

“I never thought I would be able to touch you like that again,” he said. “And now that I know I can, I never want to stop. I could take you again and again. All day long until our bodies are so spent that we cannot evenmove.”

Bree’s heart soared, and her body yearned to do thesame.

“But we cannot.” He pulled back with a sigh, smiling sadly as he cupped her cheek. “The battles will begin soon. We must getready.”

“Are you sure we don’t have just a little more time...?” She had only just reached unspeakable pleasure but already she wanted more of him. She wanted everything he’d justsaid.

“I am afraid not.” A pause. “But when all of this is over, you and I...we will finally have our time to betogether.”

Bree could only hope so, but a part of her feared that he was wrong. There was no guarantee of what would happen next. She had to battle dozens of shapeshifters in order to win Taveon his crown. She could get hurt. And she knew she could get killed. It was a horrible risk to take but one that would be worth it if they could put an end to the Tithe and all the human suffering that went withit.

Bree placed a hand on Rafe’s strong chest and gazed up at him. “I will be thinking of you during the battles. You will be the one thing that gets me through. Because I won’t just be fighting for Taveon, but I will be fighting for you. Forus.”

Rafe’s silver eyes filled with a longing that made Bree’s entire body feel weak. “I wish you did not have to fight. I wish there was some otherway.”

“But there isn’t,” she said. “This is how your worldworks.”

After Bree got dressedin her fighting leathers, Rafe took her through several drills that she mastered easily. Changing into her beastly form, controlling her every movement as the wolf, and using her claws to slash several planks of wood into pieces. They were drills they had already gone over dozens of times before, and Bree knew that she would have an edge with herstrength.

But she also knew that slashing wood to pieces was far different from killing an actual living creature, even one who was trying to kill herfirst.

Bree had never wanted to be a killer, but life takes strange turnssometimes.

“Now, I need to tell you what to expect,” Rafe said as she shifted back into her mortal, human-likeform.

“Okay,” she gave a nod through her belabored breaths. She still did not find shifting easy, no matter how many times she’d done it. It took a lot out of her. And controlling the beast took even more out of her. But she didn’t want to tell Rafe just how tired it all made her feel. She didn’t want to worry himneedlessly.

“You will face your first opponent this evening,” he began. “After you have linked yourself to Taveon. His strength will be combined with yours through the magic. That means you have far more than a fightingchance.”

Bree gave anod.

“Each evening, you will fight another champion until there are only two of you left. You must kill your opponent to win. Out of the dozens who have come here for the Battle for the Crown, only one will survive. It must be you,Bree.”
