“A Vegas fling. I’ve told you that before.” Alessandra tried to sound indignant, but Sailor knew her too well.

“Yeah, right. I see how the two of you are together. We could power up the whole casino with the electricity between you two.”

“Sexual energy. Pure and simple.”

“It’s more than that,” Sailor objected.

“Even if it is, it will end when he leaves. I’m not into professional gamblers, and I’m not into long-term relationships. I’ve done enough self-analysis to know—duh—it’s because of what happened with my dad. Still, I have plenty other data points to show why that would be a colossally bad idea. Case in point is Jon. He comes in, we think they’re super-rich, they gamble like they’re super-rich, and now he’s looking for a fucking loan.”

“Beau’s not like that, and you know it.”

“Do I, Sailor? Do I know it? I don’t think so. The last time I talked to Beau was twenty years ago. I don’t know anything for sure. As of yesterday, we thought Jon was a Silicon Valley gazillionaire. You never know it until they run out of money, and they always do. And the ones who don’t run out of money are playboys, fucking every pretty kitty while wifey is back home with the kids. Not. For. Me.”

“You’re over-generalizing,” Sailor said firmly. “I just don’t want you to miss out on the possibility of something amazing with Beau, just because you think he’ll let you down.”

“Again, Sailor, you mean, he’d let me downagain. He’s done it before, remember? I appreciate your concern. Really, I do. However, I know what I’m doing. I’m going to have dinner with him tomorrow—and yes, I’m looking forward to that. And then I’m going to most likely take my clothes off and fuck him—and yes, I’m looking forward to that, too. And then he’s going to leave on New Year’s Day and hopefully, I’ll still have a job and hopefully, I will be able to go back to my normal life.”

Sailor squinted knowingly. “Hopefully.”

Alessandra ignored the implication but used the opportunity to emphasize her point. “Now let’s go talk to Kim, yet another woman let down by a professional gambler.”
