But now I knew my pack was still in there. I couldn’t just sit here and do nothing.

For an entire year, I had believed what I had seen when being dragged away from the pack lands: the screams, the blood, the fire. I had seen so many bodies on the ground, I had believed they had all perished like that.

But I should have known better.

For the last six months, I had told myself it wasn’t worth it to go back there just to see it all destroyed. That first sight had broken me. I had barely recovered. A fresh one would break me again, and I didn’t think I could recover from that.

So I stayed away. I stayed with the vampires, living a half-life.

How foolish of me.

“I want my pack back,” I repeated.

Drake nodded. “I understand, but with the barrier, we can’t just launch an attack on them. It’ll be a massacre.”

I knew that. “We need another plan.”

“Agreed,” Drake said. “Let's gather more intel. I’ll send some vampires to scout the area. The other packs are eager to talk with us, so we'll meet with them as well. They are worried about Conri’s power.”

I closed my hands into fists as the rage and the wolf rose inside me. It would be so easy to let it out. But that wouldn’t solve anything. I reined my temper in as best as I could.

I remembered when Lavinia had been taken by warlocks not long ago. Killian was going crazy inside the walls, but there wasn’t so much he could do, that any of us could. This was the same situation. I couldn’t barge into the pack lands alone—that would be suicide—and the barrier prevented a head-on attack.

We needed a real plan, and we needed time to pull it off.

Time. I reminded myself that Raika and the others had been there for over a year, and they had survived. They could survive a few more days.

I had to believe that.

“All right,” I said through gritted teeth.

“I'll let you know as soon as we have something,” Drake said. I nodded, muttered my thanks, and marched away from him. “Shane.”

I halted and looked over my shoulder.

“If I had known, I would have told you sooner.”

“I know.” I stepped out of his office. Once I was in the hallway, Killian and Lavinia caught up with me.

“Hey, are you okay?” Lavinia asked, resting her hand on my arm. “Do you want to talk about it?”

“There’s nothing to talk about.” I shook my head. “This was … a crazy night. I’m tired. I don’t think I can sleep, but I think I really should lie down and rest.”

Killian narrowed his eyes at me. “If you need anything, let us know.”

“Sure,” I said.

This time, when I walked away, they didn’t follow me.

Once I reached my bedroom, I packed my bags.

I was leaving this damn castle and taking matters into my own hands.
