I slowed even more at the fissure’s entrance.

“Shane?” I asked, my voice low.

Wearing only dark jeans, Shane walked out from the fissure.

I took a step back and swallowed hard.

Dear moon … I was mad at him. I hated him with all my heart. But right now, all I could think was how hot he looked. His dark brown hair framed his sharp, almost cruel face, his dark eyes boring holes into mine, his expression dangerous. The moon peeked from between the trees, like a spotlight shining down on his wide shoulders, strong arms, chiseled chest, and washboard stomach. He even had that damn V that disappeared in the low hanging jeans, along with a faint patch of dark hair below his navel.

I took another step back for good measure and placed my hand inside my pockets. “What are you doing here?”

He matched my step, coming closer. “Raika …”

I slipped the metal nails in place and brought them out, my hands like claws. “Stay where you are.”

Shane frowned. “What are you doing?”

“Is this some kind of trap? Are you working with Conri?”

“What?” He raised his hands in peace. “What the hell are you talking about?”

“I don’t know, you answer me. You left us to rot, to die, for an entire year, and now you suddenly appear right when Conri takes me out. It’s like he found you and is now rubbing my nose in your freedom.”

Shane’s jaw popped as he gritted his teeth. By the moon, I had forgotten he did that when he was mad, but was holding it in … and it was sexy as hell.

In a flash, Shane rushed to me. He knocked the nails from my fingers. I tried punching him, but he pushed me back and twirled us around, until my back was against the rock formation.

“I’m not working with Conri,” he snarled, his face so close to mine. “I want the demon dead.” He tilted his head to the side. “But … I confess, I thought you were his woman.”

I almost choked. “W-what?”

“You were all dressed up and at a nightclub with him. When you first told me you were there with him, I thought he had killed everyone and kept you for himself. And you had let it happen.”

I pushed him hard on the chest. “Are you insane? I would rather die than let him touch me.”

Shane moved half a foot back but kept too close for comfort. “Then why were you there with him? Why are you at the house while the others are at the school?”

I crossed my arms. “It’s none of your business.”

His gaze flashed to my chest before settling on my face again. Men.

“Raika, I’m trying to talk to you, damn it.” Shane ran a hand through his hair, his arm tensed, his muscles strained. “I saw when he hit you earlier this evening. Are you okay?”

My eyes widened and I pressed a hand to my cheek. It didn’t hurt anymore, but … “You saw? How?”

“I was at the forest’s edge. It was so damn hard to stand back …” He shook his head. “Thank you. For protecting Minsi.”

“I didn’t do it for you.” He knew Minsi was my friend long before this mess started. I had always cared for her and always would.

“I know,” he muttered. “What happened to her? She seemed even quieter than before.”

I didn’t answer right away. I didn’t think he deserved an answer, but this was his sister. “After being kidnapped, having her parents killed in front of her, and having her brother abandon her, Minsi started having panic attacks. It was bad and it freaked out everyone.”

“Holy shit.” He clenched his fists. “And what about Tyren? I didn’t see him at the house.”

“He’s at the school with the others,” I told him. “Because he wasn’t as bad as Minsi, Conri wouldn't let me take him too.”

“What do you mean, not as bad as Minsi? How bad is he?”
