I cleared my throat. “I … I should probably go. Minsi has been alone in the house for hours now.”

“Right.”

“So … what now?”

“I’ll come up with a plan and we’ll put an end to this. I don’t know how long it’ll take, but you have my word, it’ll be soon.”

His word. Did it mean something?

Not long ago, Shane had been a cocky, conceited boy who thought the world belonged to him. The man standing before me … he wasn’t the same as that boy.

I hugged myself. “What will you do? Will you leave again? I mean, until you have a plan?”

“I can’t stay inside the pack lands the entire time, not if I don’t want to be found out.”

“I understand.” I did, but that didn’t stop the sudden disappointment from filling my chest.

“But I’m not leaving, not in the same way.” He fixed those eyes on mine again and my breath caught. “I promise you, I’ll fix this. You can count on me.”
