Oh, the cockiness in his voice. I pushed him harder and tried moving, but that only made my body rub against his more.

With a small chuckle, Shane finally moved. He turned as much as he could and helped me out, and I couldn’t help but notice how he took the brunt of it—he grazed his body against the rocks inside the fissure, while steering me away from them as best as he could.

I frowned. No, I wouldn’t read more into this than I should.

Before emerging from the fissure, we listened. No footsteps, just the regular forest sounds.

Once outside, I inhaled a lungful of fresh air and took several steps away from the fissure and from Shane. My brain needed it if I was going to think straight.

Out here, in the bright sunlight, Shane stared at me with hooded eyes, his body tense, his hands clenched.

Sometimes, I thought he was as mad about the bond as I was. He had always hated me, found me disgusting because I was the pack’s omega, and now he was tied to me for life? The stare he gave me now, it was clearly a mix of both lust and anger.

He was ready to pounce on me. The question was: to kiss me or to kill me?

I took another step back.

I didn’t know what to say to him, what to do.

Shane saved me the trouble. “My friends are waiting for me. I should go.”

I nodded and hugged myself. “Sure.”

Fishing something from his pocket, he approached me, a predator stalking his prey. I held my ground. He opened his hand and showed me a small vial. “So you can go back without being seen. The potion doesn’t last long, so wait until you’re a little closer to drink it.”

I snatched the vial from his hand. “Thanks.”

He stood there for another moment, his eyes darkening. “I’ll be back soon.”

And then he disappeared into the trees.
