RAIKA

I steppedout of my bedroom and instantly realized something was wrong. Dixon and Phell were at the end of the corridor, but there were two other demons on the other side, on the second set of stairs.

I frowned, wondering what to do. Should I wake up Minsi and go about our day normally, or should I find out what was wrong before waking her up—potentially upsetting her and triggering a panic attack.

There was no choice here.

Using the back stairs, I walked past the two demons and went down to the kitchen. Once more, I found a lot more demons than before. What was going on?

I opened my mouth to ask what the problem was when Conri walked into the kitchen, his hands inside his pants pockets, his posture upright, his gaze on my face, his eyes serious.

Something was really wrong.

My stomach tightened. Had they found Shane?

I swallowed my fear and faced the devil. “Is everything okay?”

He stalked to me, his eyes never leaving my face. I walked around the island and reached for a mug, as if I was preparing my breakfast and not putting more distance and obstacles between him and me.

Conri stopped on the other side of the island. “Last night, one of my men reported seeing a wolf shifter outside the barrier.”

My stomach dropped. “What?”

“He was able to warn us about it before being killed.” Conri leaned over the island. “I was wondering if you know anything about it?”

I gasped. “What do you mean?”

“Don’t play dumb, Raika. Do you know who the wolf shifter is? Are you helping anyone?”

“Of course not! How would I know anything when we’re locked in here? You control the barrier. We can’t get out and no one can get in.”

“True enough,” he said, his voice even. “But that doesn’t change the fact that there was a wolf shifter sniffing around the barrier and he killed one of my men.”

I pretended to think about it for a minute. “How are you sure it was a wolf shifter and not a random wolf?”

“Because there aren’t random wolves roaming this area. Besides, my man would have known.”

Usually, wolf shifters were a lot bigger than normal wolves, especially Shane, who was a male and alpha heir. I hadn’t seen him in his wolf form for a long time now, but he had always been big.

I grasped for the next ridiculous suggestion. “Are you in good standing with the other packs in the area?” I had overheard Conri talking to his demons about that too. The other packs hated him, and he even considered attacking them. “Maybe one of them is feeling threatened by you.”

He pursed his lips. “And what would you feel if it was the other packs? Would you be hopeful?”

I turned my back to him and grabbed the milk carton from the fridge. Taking my time, I came back to the island and poured the milk in the mug. “You want me to lie to your face or your back?”

Conri slapped the counter with so much force, the stone cracked. The mug and the milk carton fell to the floor and I stepped back, my heart racing.

“Is this amusing to you?” he asked with a snarl. “Let me tell you something, little wolf. If another pack comes after us, I’ll have them annihilated before they can even think about it.” He rounded the island and stood right in front of me. I stood my ground, even though my insides were a buzz of energy and my flight instinct screamed at me. “And if you so much as thinkabout helping the other packs, someone inside this pack, or anyone else at all, I’ll kill you.” He loomed over me. “But I’ll kill Minsi first, slowly and painfully, and I’ll make you watch.”

My eyes widened.

A grin stretched over Conri’s lips. “Now that we have an understanding, I have some matters to attend to.” He glanced at the demons in the kitchen. “As you can see, you’ll have new friends following you around. Be good or we’ll have to continue this talk later.”

He winked at me and left.

My knees wobbled, but I locked them and stood upright. I wouldn’t break down in front of these demons. I took in long breaths and calmed my heart, but the desperation inside me solidified.

A wolf shifter, a demon dead outside the barrier.
