“A few hours at most. It should be ready by tomorrow.”

I nodded and ate the last bit of my burger. “Good. Then I’ll warn Raika. She’ll prepare the wolves and help them with their cuffs.” I stood up and threw the remainders of my lunch in the trashcan beside the desk.

“You’re going there right now?” Killian asked. “They are probably on high alert after what happened.”

Lavinia looked at me. “He knows, but she’s his mate.” She winked at Killian. “You would have done the same.”

“True,” Killian muttered. “Just … be careful, man. Last thing we need is to have you captured.”

I nodded and reached for the small pouch on the nightstand—Lavinia had given me more potions after the attack, in case I found myself in trouble again.

“See you later,” I said, as I walked to the door. Once outside, I pushed with all my might and ran toward my pack.

Toward Raika.

* * *

The quantityof demons roaming the pack lands had increased tenfold, and if it weren’t for Lavinia’s potions, I wouldn’t have lasted ten minutes in here.

Taking full advantage of the invisibility potion, I circled the house, but only found Minsi in the kitchen with Rue, the old English teacher, and several other demons who were watching over them.

Where was Raika?

Apprehension had its nasty claws deep in my chest while I trekked toward the library—my next stop.

I knew I had made the right choice when I saw three demons standing by the front door. I went around the back, where more patrols wandered the grounds, but no one stood guard.

I shifted back into my human form, put on my jeans, and shoved the pouch in my back pocket. When all the patrols seemed to be looking away, I opened the back door, slipped in, and closed it again.

With silent steps, I crossed the back room and entered the main library, where Raika was. My nostrils flared as her scent filled the air around me, and my heart sped up when I set my eyes on her.

Raika stood by a table in front of a tall pile of books. She opened the first page of a book, looked at something, scribbled something down on the notepad, then put that book away, and did the same thing with the next book.

When she moved one of the books, her pen rolled down and she crouched to pick it up. When she stood back up, she flipped her long dark hair over her shoulder, and lust coursed through me.

She was beautiful. I had always known that, but dear moon, why did she have to wear such short shorts that barely covered her tight ass, and those fishnets over her long, lean legs, and cropped tops that showed off her flat stomach and tiny waist? Was she purposefully trying to provoke me? Provoke any male who set eyes on her?

The tingling of the potion wearing off ran across my skin.

Raika’s head snapped toward me and her blue eyes rounded. “Shane,” she whispered, and I swear, it almost sounded like she was relieved to see me. She forgot about the books and walked toward me. “How did you—?” Her eyes lowered to the healing wound on my side. She stopped right in front of me, her fingertips hovering over the red lines. “What happened? Are you okay?”

Was that worry? By the moon, I hoped it was. “You should have seen the other guy,” I joked.

She frowned, lowering her hand. “I know. Conri told me one of his demons was killed. It was you, wasn’t it?”

I nodded, not proud of my actions. But since being taken last year, I had killed more supernaturals than I dared to count. I had turned into a killer, even if a well-intentioned one.

“I had to,” I confessed. “He was radioing the others, telling them about me.”

“I understand,” she said, almost too quickly. “Conri asked if I knew anything about it, if I was helping anyone.”

I clenched my fists. “Did he hurt you?”

Raika shook her head. “No. I don’t think he knows what’s going on, but he’s not taking any chances.” She gestured to the door. “You probably saw the number of demons crowding the town now, right?”

“I did.”

“So, what do we do now? Have you come up with a plan?”
